Gas BBQ suggestions?

I've finally had to finally accept that charcoal BBQing is pretty much a no go in hot countries these days due to fire risks. We spent 4 weeks away in Italy/Croatia this summer and I was not able to use our small charcoal BBQ once. As we will (hopefully) getting our new PVC in November I'm looking around for a gas BBQ, preferably operating from canisters. The Cadac Safari Chef looks interesting, but I'm a bit concerned about it getting hot enough and the gas lasting a reasonable length of time. I need it to be as small as possible as space in the new PVC is tight. If anyone has experience of the Safari Chef I'd be interested to get opinions. Also if anyone has any suggestions of other compact gas BBQs I'd be very interested.

Cadac stand at the shows is always full of people.
Acquired one recently 2nd hand and they do the job.

I've had several , including the Cadac which I hated ..

The best I've used is Weber Q 1000 ..I love this barbie ..

also have the Weber Go-Anywhere gas model. also good but not so easy to clean as the Q100

I have the Go-Anywhere for sale in the classifieds

I have the coal version of this, but could do with something that takes up less space. I use a very compact folding coal bbq at moment.

Cadac stand at the shows is always full of people.
Acquired one recently 2nd hand and they do the job.
We used the Safari Chef for about 5 years, the LP version with Campingaz 907 was enough for our needs and very compact for storage in the PVC . My only complaint was non-working piezo ignition which persisted even after Cadac supplied replacement parts. We’ve now upgraded to the bigger Cadac 2 Cook 2 Pro which is excellent and no ignition problems.

I bought the Q1200, but just too big for the van, hence the now using the go anywhere.
yes, I understand .

that was why I bought the Go-Anywhere.. but preferred the Q1200 ..

I found I could store the lid of the Q1200 under the sink, and the base in the bottom of another locker.. hence selling the GoAnwhere which we only used a few times.

We have one, used once with all the fittings for our pvc. If you're interested, I'll send you the link to the one we have. Compact but ample size to do a 2-3 person bbq with various offerings in the one go. Also has all the bbq tools, unused as we only used the tongs we already had

We’ve bought the Safari Chef at the Malvern show and it’s a BIG step up from the gas/lava rock we had previously. It’s easy to pack once you’ve done the jigsaw of what fits into which and it cleans in the sink. It’s not a huge cooking area but we managed ribs, sausage and chicken for 6 With a bit of careful planning - different courses. We use ours from the van gas via bbq point so can’t help with canister durability.
We like it a lot!

Campingaz Party Grill, uses CV470 cannisters, plenty of heat, easy to clean and stow.

I use the Cadac Safari Chef all the time, most mornings and evenings when out and about, bacon & egg rolls, burgers, chicken, sausages, steaks. Gets more than hot enough on about third of the flame. Ok not the same as charcoal, in terms of taste but as an outdoor grille it works well.

After five or so years mine is now quite battered, it's fallen off the table too many times so the burner is no longer quite level leading to slightly uneven cooking, the igniter works sometimes, depending on whether it's got bent out of alignment, the griddle plates are no longer non stick ... Also doesn't like wind so frequently I will have a windbreak.

Mine is the low pressure version which I then have a small Cadac hose with regular that screws into C500 size cannisters. I buy a sixpack of these which will last me over a year. Given that this summer I probably spent less than a month at home, in four months, that seems reasonable economics, and easier than being restricted to a gas point fitted to the van.

Thanks for all the comments. The Cadac Safari Chef 30 looks like the one for us. We saw one this afternoon. Tempted to go for the high pressure. We have 2 German gas bottles and one UK so the disposable cans seem a better option. I'm not sure I can do with the faff of getting a big gas bottle out everytime I want to use the Cadac. Although I'm assuming if I bought the high pressure version and got an adaptor I could then use either the disposable or the refillable?

I've exactly the same Jock, £36 from my local gas supplier, they last 3 / 4 years, bin it, get another. Plugs into the gas connection on the side of my van along with a little 2 burner stove, brilliant.

So does that mean you get the benefit of being able to use disposable cannisters and standard motorhome refillable bottles?

If you have the Low pressure (LP) version of the Cadac, you can use the HP to LP hose and regulator adaptor to attach cannisters. The hose / regulator will be specific to the type of cannister, so for the C500 type cannister with the EN417 thread you need: https://www.cadacinternational.com/en417-regulator/ .

You can't (for fairly obvious reasons) have a HP version of the Cadac and then try and attach that to your LP big Calor / Flogas cylinders, or the LP BBQ point on your van.

Do any of the Cadac range qualify as BBQs ?

Good as they are, cooking on a gas hotplate is not the same as a barbie.

A proper gas barbie gives the same taste and flavour as cooking on a charcoal one. The flavour comes the smoke created by the meat juices burning and smoking on the burner ..
