Garmin map update

I daren't Update my Garmin 785 via express, I only dare do it via WiFi, I’m thinking TomTom next time!
I’m not interested in copilot, waze, or the other one, is it Sygic or something, tried em years ago couldn’t get on with any of them, now if only google maps had vehicle dimensions that you could enter it’d be very good🤔👍

Strange fact re satnavs and ordinary maps.
We live in a cul-de-sac in a rural location and occasionally satnavs and maps show a short, nonexistent, named road carrying on from the end of our lane.
Apparently Ordnance Survey include several imaginary roads like this, in positions where they are unlikely to do any harm, so that, if someone uses their database without authorisation, they will inadvertently include these ‘errors’ and OS can take action.

Help please Guys:pray:
Trying to update maps on my Garmin Tourer 770, plugged into computer with appropriate usb lead etc, Garmin Express recognises the device and confirms its connected.
I start the update, and as usual its tells me to wait while it downloads software, having waited a long time it comes up with the message saying "Insufficient space on your computer"
When I select the settings button it tells me that the sat nav internal memory is 88% full, with the additional installed 32Gb SD card saying it has Zero data stored on it.
I contacted Avtex Support and the guy said that the software updates are so large these days that they need a 32GB SD card installed which I confirmed it already had, but it was showing no data stored on it. I did buy the appropriate SD card size an type as recommended.
The support guy said I needed to start the Garmin Express download and having had the computer recognise it, wait until I get the message about insufficient memory on computer, then remove & replace The SD card and hope it will then move onto downloading files.
It seems to want to do this and starts to countdown the downloading files, but it stops and tells me again insufficient memory on computer.
My question is is it the computer memory that is lacking space with this message coming up, or the sat nav device?
My computer has already stored The Garmin Express software, so no more memory should be needed on the computer hard drive or does it need more space?
Thanks.
LES

I had the same problem last week, it sems to look at the satnav memory (insufficient space), but ignores the sd card with plenty of space) I deleted the history and favorites from the sat nav . That allowed to update to upload. I had to re-enter my motorhome dimensions afterwards

I have this issue with my ZUMO 660 (a motorcycle unit) despite having a 32GB SD card, express doesn't seem to recognise it.

I get over it by downloading the new map to computer only, then use Garmin 'Mapinstall' to load the card with the mapping.

A few questions first, Les.

I assume you're running Garmin Express on a Windows computer?
If so, what version?
Open File Explorer (assuming it's Win 10 or 11) and right click C:Windows then left click Properties. It should look like this (Win 11)

- what does it say for Free Space?

That's what could be your problem - 11.1Gbs free!

I think Garmin Express may download to the hard disc of your pc before then installing it to your sat nav. The map download is larger than your free space.

Out of curiosity can you look to see if you have this on your pc and if you do what is the contents of the folder - C:Windows/Program Data/Core Service/Downloads/Maps

btw The 2016.01 folder in mine is 23Gb but that may be due to me using Garmin BaseCamp.

Thanks Gellyneck
Well thats opened up a whole new can of worms on my laptop, it seems that Garmin updates are all stored on the SSD and we need to somehow find all the old map updates and delete them to create more space.
I will probably have 6 years plus of old map updates in there needing to be deleted somehow. I am tired just now, but will have a fresh look at what I can do at the weekend.
Thanks for your help, this is what I found when I copied your link, too many people having problems I fear, Garmin should have a decent housekeeping facility to stop old updates being stored indefinitely IMV.

No problems, Les.(y)

Guess who went through a similar problem a couple of years back?:whistle2:

If the aforementioned folder is "packed" with previous / outdated map folders it's fairly easy to rectify however if you're using BaseCamp / Mapsource it's a "two step" process. It's that easy it now forms part of my "map update" process.
  1. Update firmware / software process
    1. connect your sat nav to your laptop / desktop
    2. using Garmin Express find out if there are updates for your sat nav (there's an easier way to find if there is a map update by using the link I gave in post #2)
    3. install any updates (I initially exclude any map update) available
    4. re-run Garmin Express and install the map update (as part of this sub-step select "install to both computer and device" - or something like that - if you are using BaseCamp / Mapsource)
  2. "Clean-up" process
    1. if maps are installed to your computer (1.4 above) check the new map update is found by BaseCamp / Mapsource and, assuming it is,
    2. go to "Programs and Features" and uninstall any earlier version of Garmin City_Navigator_Europe_NTU_xxxx.xx)
    3. close "Programs and Features" and open "File Explorer"
    4. go to the folder I mention in post #13
    5. select the older map version(s) folders and delete
    6. remember to empty your Recycle Bin because the deleted map(s) folder(s) wont be fully deleted until you do
    7. running "Disk Clean-up" also helps so you may want to do that, as well. Think you know how to do that as you mention it in post #12
    8. prior to doing the above steps (2.x) you can check what free space you have by the process I mentioned in post #11 and then doing it again after running them. You'll be amazed at the increase in Free Space.
Think that covers it, and best of luck getting it sorted🙏, but give me a shout if anything unclear or you get stuck.👍

As far as I know none of the satnavs have an option to avoid low emission zones. That would be useful.
You can set up your own very, very, very, did I say very, crude Custom Avoidances on Garmin BaseCamp and some of their devices.

Basically, it's a rectangular area that they wont route you through, eg

However, a number of their newer devices, and Camper 760 and 780 are included in this, have LEZ avoidance where you can set it up to Always Ask, Avoid or Allow.

Just done mine and it's says 2025.10

It did prompt me to have a look at all the Garmin files and folders and they were well bloated. I uninstalled Garmin Express as the easiest way to get rid of all the crap and re-installed, all good.

Are you sure it's not 2016.10, Dane?
From memory 2025.10 came out around end of 2023.
No defo 2025.10. It's a 15 year old Nuvi 1390 maybe it can't be updated any longer. I can see on Garmin's website it should be 2026.10 for EU maps

Oh bugger, looks like I need a new Satnag. Just had a look on the Garmin website and this came up in relation to my 15 year old nuvi 1390 unit. I never thought about checking the update version on my device I just assumed all was good as it indicated that it was up to date when using Garmin Express.

NOTES:
  • In accordance with the Lifetime Maps and Maps Terms and Conditions, map updates and/or Downloadable Content (DLC) are no longer available to download or purchase and cannot be activated and/or associated with the Garmin devices listed in Map Updates and Downloadable Content No Longer Available to Download or Purchase.
  • This is due to these devices not having sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data.

Just ordered a Garmin Camper 795 from Halfrauds Went through Quidco and along with the 4% cashback I got another £30 off using their supplied discount code.

Need to sit down in a darkened room now to recover.
