Hi folks, Can anyone tell me what the advantages of this thing are over Google maps? i've just purchased one and have never owned such a thing before and am struggling to get it to work as well (i supposed better than) as Google maps! I phoned Garmin and they just ply you with more instructions which don't necessarily work or answer the questions!
1 - It can't find the route to our address even with our postcode - it has us going through a neighbour's property where there is no track. The map doesn't have our lane on it but it's visible in Bird's Eye.
2- It can't find things like Ferry terminals, and I can't get it to get me out of Stenaline's Ferry Terminal in Gothenburg for example in Route Planner.
3- unlike Google , it doesn't show alternative options, but expects me to know and mark alternatives! i'm looking for it to make the suggestions since I don't know the lie of the land!

PS - I'm not a complete idiot, but something can't be quite right and I can't work out how to do it. Youtube videos seem to deal with absolute basics, like set up. My maps are updated.

Yours helplessly!

We have the 895 which replaced our Avtec Tourer Two. We have travelled over 7000 miles around Europe using it and never had a problem. I just make sure the settings are correct on the day of travel ie avoid motorways avoid tolls etc. We only ever use Eurotunnel or Calais so can't comment on Gothenburg. We use co-ordinates mainly but have used postcodes again no problem. We use live traffic and if there's a problem ahead it suggests alternatives. We like it. Can't get my head around the problem with yours. Hopefully someone will be along soon who understands them better than me

I bought a Garmin 780 camper after using Google maps for ages, and struggled to plot routes etc. I was used to just finding somewhere on Google and clicking on directions.
I now use Garmin Drive app on phone. You can research and plan on Google maps then send location to Garmin Drive by Bluetooth and it will plot the route from there.
There is also another Garmin tool, can't remember the name, but it needs a Windows PC to use and I don't have one now so no use to me.

We have a Garmin 780 and have found it to work very well in most cases.
Generally we decide where we are going, I then look up the exact coordinates on goggle maps and enter the same coordinates into the Garmin.
Give it a name (e.g. Holyhead Port) and save it.
It then appears on your list of favourites.
A bit of a roundabout way of doing it but it works well for us.
I suppose I could just use Google maps but using the Garmin means that I don't have to worry about phone reception or data usage.
Strange that it doesn't give route options. From memory ours usually gives at least two options.

The windows PC app is Garmin Basecamp. It takes a bit of getting used to but is powerful. Garmin express is the tool used to check and install updates from the PC to the sat nav.

There are online sources of points of interest files including campsites etc that can be added to both basecamp and the SatNav if wanted

I have a 760 camper, but think they all have a similar 'menu'.

A couple of more points.. when you select a destination you should get a banner pop up with three options "Routes..i..Go!", selecting Routes may give you a couple of choices.. 'i' is information.

For ferry terminals.. 'Where To?..> 'Catergories' scroll down to 'Public Transport' and you should have menu to choose from Airports, Bus Stations, Ferry Terminals etc. Type in the ferry terminal you're after.

Thank you. That was helpful.

Thanks for this. Yes, by comparison Garmin doesn't seem to have access to nearly so much information as Google Maps. Why use a Garmin then, other than you can type your vehicle dimensions in?

So where do you get your lat and long from? Gothenburg ferry terminal have some on their site but my machine can't find the place! Entering them has frozen the stop button and while I managed to restore it 10minutes ago after an afternoon of total frustration, it's happened again, and I don't know how I unfroze it!

Thanks, will maybe give that a go!

How do you delete a search without deleting the whole history of searches? Ie, if you put in the wrong information and pressed Go, how do you delete that particular search?

Do you mean in 'History'? I don't think you can delete just one search... I normally make sure any searches I want are saved as 'Favourites' then clear search history.

Favourites can be deleted one at a time.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for that tip.

Morning. Never had a problem with it freezing. Lynne usually checks our destination online and finds co-ordinates. Wondering if you have a faulty unit?
