Our van is blowing fuses without there being any load and no EHU.

The fuse is the 20A on the rhs of the controller. (It’s removed in this photo). I’ve turned off the electricity, fridge and water pump. The heater and hot water are off too.

The icon by this fuse looks like it’s the EHU but when the fuse is blown all that doesn’t work is the bed raise and the outside step.

We do have some damage to the step that means it won’t currently go in or out but Afaik it only tries to move when the button is pressed or the ignition goes on - neither of these are happening right now.

The sun control does look to be trying to charge (conditioning cycle) the leisure battery.

My voltmeter says 13v across this fuse zero if I turn the isolator off so I guess it is the main input from the battery.

I tried a 25A fuse and it blew that too.

As above. Remove by disconnecting any of the items that it supplies (aren’t currently working). Then try with a 20amp fuse again. Not higher.
The step does sound like it could be the issue.

I suspect the step too. I wish I knew which the supply was. It’s not accessible outside and not labeled inside.

So after skinning a few knuckles I can’t get into the step and I don’t want to hit into the ducting leading into it and randomly cuts some wires. I guess we’ll live without the bed going up until we get the step replaced.

thanks everyone

maybe a step relay you could pull to sort for now ?

Have you actually looked under the van s to the rear of the step.? There must be some wiring or a relay visible.

There will be a Schaudt step relay probably a EMS-03 - xx mounted someware inside the van, under a cupboard or draw near the step or under one of the front seats. Find it and disconnect it.

I cannot find that. There’s a rats nest under the drivers seat but I can’t see a relay there. I’ve had the only drawers out and nothing behind them. The wiring from the step enters the van under solid floor.

I’ll maybe look in other less likely places when I have a little more time and space - ie no Flynn cluttering up everywhere I try and look.

Thanks, but that’s not a massive worry at the moment as the bed is down in its sleeping position - we just have to crawl to access the stuff stored underneath.

Will look something like this, more versions than I thought this is a 5.

If there's voltage across the fuse while you're not using anything, that does suggest it's a straight short to ground somewhere. No?

The supply from that fuse (yes it is the step supply) comes out of the terminal 18, which is the middle row on the right hand side. If you pull that wire off, then try another fuse, that will tell you if the fault is inside the EBL or in the wiring from it. And you now know the colour/thickness of the wire so that's a clue for tracing its route.

Three of the fuses are like that, ie they are not switched off by the 12V switch on the display panel. They are the Step, Solar and the AES fridge supply. All the others are cut off by the 12V switch on the display panel. So you can go out for the day, switch off the display panel switch, and the step, solar charging and AES fridge still work OK. while you are out.

Our van was made by adria so guess the twin has similar wiring arrangements.
(Assume you have RHD) at the bottom of the door pillar drivers side behind the removable panel is where my step wiring came in. Bit of a rats nest in there as well. You might be able to find 2 cables 1 has pos and neg that is the live feed. The other is 2 wire control.

The EBL211 user manual has a wiring diagram at the back, doesn't have all the motorhome wiring details but is still quite useful. It is available on the Schaudt website. Now complicated bu the merger with Lippert but I think the support site is still working.

Thanks everyone. After some searching we decided that we can live without the bed raising for a short time. We need a new step anyway - it's never been right since we scraped it boarding the Komani ferry. I think it was then anyway, it was a little fraught so I wasn't super aware what every bump and scrap was 😬. I've been putting off the replacement because the quote is £500 and even then it's difficult to find anyone interested in this work.

Looking at what I can see, I suspect that is the case but (as above) I am not going to go in there. Although going in there would allow me to disconnect that annoying Fiat courtesy light I always manage to kick before going to bed.

Yeh that bl°°dy light!
I think I found the step wiring diagram by downloading the Thule installation instructions.
If I ever demolish another step it will be replaced by a manual version.

So I caved in and took the cover off the door pillar. I can’t see a scaudt relay although it might be under the floor panel where most of the wiring disappears. There are two Sun Hold RSV-1C-M-12H relays. Which might be one for the bed and one for the step.

Neither looks to have wiring that exits the van though. Only one of them looks to have wiring which *might be connected to terminal 18 of the EBL.

There are also a bunch more fuses in there.

This is only from memory.
The fuses are for various vehicle (manufacturer) functions.
My step wires came into the van down there to the left in a black convoluted trunking.
2cables 2 wires each but it was relatively easy to get the rights ones because I had detached the step and cut the wires at the step end.
I made sure that I cut each wire individually and insulated it so as not to short anything out.
