I was a newbie
Hi,

might be a daft question, but i am due to collect my new motorhome in just over a couple of weeks and the dealer requires full payment 14 days prior to handover, is this a normal Motorhome dealers practice as i am very wary of parting with dosh before i have the goods in my hand or am i am being to cautious, if they did go bust in that 2 week period i would just end up a creditor with diddly squat as collateral
Many thanks, Mick

I would want to also at least inspect it before paying. We paid by debit card on collection after the collection walk around.

Presumably they have a deposit, I'd suggest to them a bank transfer on the day of collection.
You may need to arrange it with your bank though as there is usually a maximum daily limit, typically £10 k.

Presumably you’ve paid a hefty deposit on the van, was it made clear in the documentation that full balance was to be paid prior to collection? If not, tell them to swivel. I’ve never paid in full before collection on either Motorhome, caravan or car.

A decent deposit yes, then if you "default" the dealer has something towards his costs.

But full payment? No way. When we purchased our van we arranged with the dealer that once we were happy with the "goods" we would arrange a bank transfer - actually we paid by pre-arranged debit card, just took a couple of minutes and one phone call. The only "condition" by the dealer was that he wanted paying before the end of the month, presumably for his sales figures - okay with us and he was happy enough with 31st.

We weren’t required to part with a penny until the day of collecting for this or our previous motorhome, both involved part exchanges, otherwise I would have expected to pay a deposit.
Don’t pay for anything until seen, inspected and excepted.
I wouldn’t enter into that agreement, it could be legal thing that the two week ‘cooling off’ period passes before you pick it it up.

I suppose they might be a bit nervous if you have had it extensively modified just for you in such a way that it would be hard to sell to anyone else. However, the payment profile should have been explained and agreed upon at the outset. We paid the balance on ours when we collected it.

have they even got it, maybe the supplyer wants the money first , are they a flybynight firm or a recognised dealer?

Not a chance. Why would anyone pay for any vehicle in full, before they've seen it.

We put a small deposit on ours, then when we went to collect it from the dealer we had the full handover, then did another inspection ourselves walking around it, and only then paid in full on debit card. The van was mint and all in order, otherwise we would not have paid. It was the same with a recent car purchase, payment was made on the day of collection, after a full inspection.

Ask yourself this; if there is anything wrong with the van, how likely is he to rush and fix it for you, if he has all your money already sat in his bank.

Not only wouldn't I do it (in any circumstances), I would seriously question about whether or not it was someone I wanted to buy from.

Deposit then pay the remaining after you have inspected it and had a demo of all the parts working, never had tp pay upfront and wouldn,t expect to off any reputable dealer.
Where are you buying from?

It's an interesting subject.

You don't pay the supermarket before you go and collect your shopping, but holiday companies always want full payment several weeks or months before the holiday. Some things we accept it for, others seem wrong.

Thanks guys, i rang the finance guy at the main dealer (big named dealer) and he said a couple of days before is fine, he said it was just in case there was problems transferring that amount of cash, i think I will just turn up with the debit card on the day and do it there and then, if they dont like that then tough, i want the log book in my hand.

Many thanks for all your replies

Tell them to get stuffed, Had a friend who sent a cheque to the dealer on Mondady ready to pick up the van on Friday, they cashed the cheque and went bump on Thursday.

Normally a transaction limit and you can make multiple transactions on the same day, or exceed the limit with prior notification.

As all the others have said no no and no! In the same way never pay a builder(don't mean to tar any honest builders which I know exist!) up front for materials. A sure way to lose a bundle of cash.

In this day of instant payments the finance department bid having you on.

Not normal in my experience. Have you asked why? There may be some 'middle ground' you are able to meet in.

On the day I collected mine I paid the balance (90%) by direct bank transfer, simple.

No way would I give that large deposit, on the 3 new Hymers we have had only put down £1000, I believe a deposit should be an amout you are prepared to loose if you can't complete the deal.

Pre-arranged debit card transfer on the day was how we paid for our recent car purchase.
For our MH - Southdown’s at Portsmouth, I did pay a couple of days before pickup, as requested, but I was buying a showroom model and had already seen it. I was also completely satisfied with the dealer reputation.

Purchased ours from Becks, Yarmouth.. Paid £1k deposit when we viewed it .. and £21k balance on pickup day .. both transactions were by current account Debit Card .

I was amazed that it was so simple.. thought it would have required a phone to the bank at least..as easy as paying for a weeks shopping in Tesco..

Lots of horror stories of people paying upfront and regretting it later.

Strongly recommend you pay on the day. I have bought a good few motorhomes in my day and never had an issue from any of them using Visa Debit and Switch before that. The payment has been deferred a few times and a few times after speaking with the bank prior to requesting the payment has gone through. I have paid 6 figure sums without issue.

I remember hearing about a guy who bought a new van from Discover Leisure. He had made payment and was collecting it in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the liquidators were called in before collection. All assets were being secured. Luckily, one of the salesman was a decent guy and drove his van out onto the public highway and advised the new owner the keys were in it and to get there ASAP and collect. If this had not been done he would have had to file a claim with all the other debtors with little chance of getting his money back.

I pay deposit on CC and balance by Visa Debit (would use Visa for points if they would accept it)

As others have said, don't part with the money until you have inspected the new motorhome and are happy with it. We also insisted that the dealer checked our trade in and wss happy with it as well.

No problem for our dealer as that was always what they did anyway. I then paid the difference with my debit card after making sure the money was in my current account.

Mention it to the bank. There won’t be a problem, just tell them that you will doing it on that day for that amount. Easy peasy. Then it’s inspect, check everything, sign everything, then debit card in and 10 secs later it’s done. Everyone’s happy.

Interestingly, I’ve just remembered that when I bought my car a few weeks ago, from a reputable dealer, he suggested that I transferred the money in advance, to make sure it cleared. I said no, I would pay by debit card on the day, after inspection.

Contrary to all the scare stories... paid the full balance for my Wildax about 10 days before collection.
Bit surprised but it all went very smoothly.
Perhaps because it was built to order?

What's in your contract?
