Before leaving the UK I topped up with half a tank of Shell V power diesel just to give the old girl a treat ?

Have been amazed at mpg we have achieved since ? mid 20’s every day

Compared to a more typical 19-20 mpg

We have not been driving fast but not much slower than normal

Came to refuel today and was faced with this choice

The right hand one was easy ? and based on my sniffing the left hand nozzle much to Bev’s disapproval that I confirmed was petrol

I was told not to sniff anymore and use the right hand pump , pretty sure the one next to it would have been super diesel but not brave enough to use it with Bev’s eyes glaring at me ?

We are in Germany btw, anybody else know which is which ?

€1.26 / litre ??

We do relatively low miles in the Motorhome and alway use the good stuff when we refill.

But often can't buy it whilst abroad and sometimes when Sandra has a Sainsbury 10p off token I weaken and get the watered down stuff. :D

All look to be petrol except for the black diesel one. I would stick to those that state diesel, just to be sure, that is if your unsure. (y)

White one is gin, but I think you said that tank was full, so once again Bev was right.

And I thought you said that now you're retired you don't pay more than €1/litre for gin.

Just as well you didn't ... Thats 98 octane PETROL.
Petrol is OCTANE
Diesel is CETANE
In order left to right.

Regular petrol
10% ethenol petrol
Super petrol
Regular Diesel

I use Shell V power every other fill up in my car and motorhome, and it does make a difference to the mpg (y)

As it has an Octane Number mentioned it is Petrol.

Edit: Should have read following posts .

Coincidence

I can get 35 mpg out of a Range Rover one Day, 27 the Next.
30 Mpg in a Sprinter van, 22 the next

26 overall in a 20 year old Fiat Motorhome, 22 from a Modern Mercedes Motorhome weighing less and lower profile.

70mpg in an Audi A2 Diesel, 46 around town.

So Many factors. But Posh Pecky won't get you 20% more MPG.

I found Redex in Wilco on offer so thought Id give it a try. Made no difference on my landrover but about a 10% improvement in mpg on the motorhome. Both similar engines 3L V6 turbo diesel, though the motorhome is much heavier. Dont know the reason, both using supermarket diesel and mpg from the readout.
Anyway as it seems to work I still add it when I fill up the mh if I remember.

I am in general agreement with you but these are the three trips since docking in Zeebrugge

It has been a fairly flat run till now across Belgium
To Aachen, then Koblenz, now 60 miles up the Mosel, will report the next two journeys now we have standard diesel in the tank

Coincidence or not we have saved about 20% or more usefully gone more miles between fills, normally refill at about 250 miles did 300 this time and no low fuel light on, it often is ?

As long as it states B7 you’re good for diesel

We always use premium when available as we think it does make a difference

Red or white it does nothing seem to make any difference to me.

Another factor that may be giving improved mpg is the traffic density and amount of stop start , both of which are far lower in Europe ? I have found better mpg in Europe , and with a 800/ 900mile range the fuel variability doesnt seem to make any difference (also with different vehicles) JMHE

I get 26.7 out of my sprinter, 3.5 ton

Same from my 20 year old fiat !

After Mr Wombles accidentally filled with Shell V Power instead of standard diesel several years ago (& I moaned about the extra cost!) we found it made our old car run quieter, pull better & increased fuel economy enough to cancel out the extra cost so now run both car & motorhome on it when possible. Did fill up our car with Esso premium "Supreme+" diesel recently & weren't impressed - haven't checked fuel economy yet but our car engine certainly didn't like it so won't do that again.

DavidG58 and Teemyob - how do you get the consumption to read out in mpg? I have a 2009 518 CDI that only appears to read out in litres per 60 kms. The speedo and trip meters read in miles but I don't get an mpg read out?

Is yours a UK spec? Mine defaults to this display

In France there is E85 available at around €0.70 a litre. Bioethanol mostly made from sugar beet I understand, but only a few cars can use it at the moment.

You usually have to go on a STAR Machine at Mercedes.

My RHD Frankia read in 1/100km too

Hagstrom the infamous sprinter display. Trying to sort it will only cause distress.... Before picking up a brand new van in 2017, I asked the dealer to sort it, they said they couldn't. I contacted Hymer, they failed to respond other than to acknowledge the question, Mercedes were quick to respond telling me it was fixed to the country the base was delivered, there is a country code in the settings, advised I went back to hymer. Hymer simply didn't respond. I received a notice to get some software updates done, so off to the Mercedes truck dealer, they had all of the gear...while you are on I asked, could you sort this, an hour later the Mercedes technician came back and said no. Tried again at the first service, said it had to be a fault as right hand drive, speedo in mph etc. Mercedes dealer agreed but after a call to Germany, they couldn't change it. I just ignore it now.
