Fuel smell from garage?

Just wondering what the real-world experience is of carrying a bike/scooter in a garage with a moveable bed above it? Sitting on the bed, and peering down the sides, there's quite a gap all around...does this all need to be sealed somehow?
Thinking of a Honda Vision 110 at the moment. But will I have to go electric:confused:
Having kept my old xj650 in the dining room years ago, I remember the pervading smell of petrol fumes...:unsure:

I keep our Honda Vision in the shed and I've never smelled petrol in the shed. 👍
 
Our old Sym scooter had a carburetter. Although no sign of a fuel leak Sandra could smell petrol in garage. Changing the fuel hoses sorted that. Bike was about 6 years old then.
Current scooter is Suzuki Address, no issues.
 
I had a fuel injected Honda S wing fes 125. On the first trip with it, we could smell petrol in the bedroom above. I found out later that the there were vents and the garage was not sealed. On the second trip we used a Hydratrail.

Suzuki address. Absolutely no issues apart from (the wife) leaving the petrol can open making the van nearly undriveable through the smell.

I sealed my garage gaps with water pipe insulation .

We keep our Suzuki Address Scooter in the garage of our motorhome permanently. Never smelt any petrol in the garage or the motorhome. The days of leaky carburettors are long since gone, all sealed fuel injection now.
Thank goodness. Got my bike out yesterday for the MOT, not been run since last August, started on the button 😎
 
As Lenny says with fuel injection there should be no smells and there certainly isn't from our Honda SH 125.

The simplest and most effective answer is a dropper vent in the floor or back of the garage. Similar to ones in garage lockers.

Petrol fumes sink and some bikes (even injected) will smell,.

Make sure the vent has splash guard to prevent water spray and gauze or wire wool to prevent insect visitors.
 
We have an electric height adjustable bed over the garage with Vespa 300 being carried. All fuel injected bikes have a vent system due to the expansion and contraction of petrol. But we don't get any smell.
 
Cheers all ! I suppose that I had hoped there couldn't be much of a problem, as there is hardly owt mentioned about it on the forum, but it's definitely reassuring to read some real experiences. As mentioned, petrol tanks have to have some venting system (sometimes in the filler caps) to manage pressures so I was wondering! Some nice ideas for solutions, too, ta very much. Once we get the bed height set, i might try some pipe insulation anyway!(y)

I think a lot of folks have an overdeveloped sense of smell
I've carried a generator and plastic can of fuel under the lounge bench seating ......not the slightest whiff of petrol
I've carried plastic fuel cans for mower, chain saw etc in the car boot......never a whiff of petrol

Hi Martin, we’re in the dilemma of 2x E bikes or a scooter, I was looking at the Honda SH300/350 as I discounted the 125 as being way underpowered (without trying one) what is your opinion of the 125 bearing in mind I’m a few lbs heavier than you😉 We would be two up all the time and we would have to uprate the Carthago to 5ton
 
We carried a Honda Grom for the first year or so and never noticed any petrol smells.
We replaced it with 2 ebikes and installed chargers in the garage, purely for ease of use.
We find the venting handy in cold climes as the heating pipes go through the garage and the heat rises into the bed area keeping us warm overnight.

Underpowered? yes of course;) but it's all relative and it's just a scooter for a bit of getting about rather than all up touring and for that it works fine, OK a 300 would have been great I am sure and I did think about it but I argued,

1. As above it's just for getting about.

2. I/we would not be riding in full protective gear so a little less power/speed might be a good thing, i'm not so bad with Jen on the back but on my own I know it would be flat out and that would be too quick without some protection and I would look stupid in my "race leathers" (doubt they still fit anyway)

I should also say that the extra bit of height and length would have made it more of a job getting the 300 in the garage as the 125 goes in with mirrors on and top box in situ.

We take bikes as well and use those more than the scooter.

Don't keep a old triumph t140 in the garage. With their "Designed in" pressure relief systems, there will be oil and fuel all over the place 😂😂😂😂😂
However as stated new bikes have enclosed injection systems which should be fully sealed.
 
We carried a KTM Duke in the garage, i could smell faint petrol but John could not, do have a good sense of smell. Don't know if i got used to it or something changed, but after first couple of days never noticed again. Now carry bike on an easilifter since changing motorhome.

Lol. I must admit a memory of 'tickling' the carbs of my old T140v, producing petrol-stained gloves comes to mind! Think we'll give it a go with a vision 110 and sell the bike on if the smell sends us to sleeping in a pup-tent!
Wish we had a bit more payload to play with (like many others😆) but hey-ho
 
I carry petrol generator and get the smell so I’ve put two extractor fans in the floor one blowing in and one sucking out and also put the mattress on a quilt so the space round the mattress gets sealed
 
I have a Honda Vision 110. It travelled in the garage of my Hymer. It’s fuel injected so no petrol leaks, (no carb to tickle!) no petrol smells at all. It’s great for the job. More than enough go, even 2 up so as not to be an embarrassment! Enough room for 2 er grownups. With a top box there’s room for 2 helmets locked away out of sight when parked. Go for it!

Or a further alternative - Electric Scooter. We use this and find it works well for us. Not the power of a 125 of course!

 
For us it was the Vespa gts300. Traction control, abs, 158kgs and fast enough for the odd motorway blast, two up with shopping under the seat and 46 litre top box.
 
I carry a SH125 & a generator with a 5L can , no problems with smells , fast enough bearing in mind we are there to see the country not to speed through it 😁 , I would not try to seal the garage , it’s vented for good reasons

That sounds good - there's a few scoots/bikes I would like, but with a somewhat dodgy back I have a feeling I need to prioritise a lighter weight to manhandle in and out of the garage. Luckily we are a couple of relative lightweights (140kg combined), and I nowadays we like to 'tootle' about on a bike, so (with what Colinyellowspanner says above - hopefully the Vision might just suit us🤷‍♂️
