We have a one acre lake on our property. Looks great but major problem we cannot keep our dogs off the ice. Terrified they are going to fall in.

Need to find somewhere close by to York where we can take them for the day in the motorhome and be able to just open the door and let them out to run around One is a puppy and she is in and out every few minutes so trying to avoid putting a lead on and off every few minutes.

Return home in the dark because they don’t seem to go out on the lake in the dark.

Any thoughts or ideas. Within say a 1 hour drive ?

Put a couple of pallets on the lake ,it would be somewhere they could hang on to if the ice failed.
Too large (an acre) and too many access points. We have a life ring and rope to throw but for the next week we really need to take them away from the ice

We lived on Mirror Lake in New Hampshire and like all the lakes there it freezes over from mid November until April. The ice is thick enough for people to walk on, snowmobile and even set up cabins for ice fishing. Thay use a petrol auger (like a post hole digger) to drill through the ice which is up to a metre thick.
the adjacent Lake Winnipasaukee (which is massive) has some islands which usually have their building materials shipped over by 14 wheeler artics in Winter because its quicker, easier and cheaper than using barges when the lake Is not frozen.
Wolfeboro town on Lake Winnipasaukee has an ice fishing competition each year and there might be several thousand people out on the ice with their pickup trucks and barbeques.
strange thing about a frozen lake is that I though it would be flat - but not so! Obviously the water freezes at some point, but if the wind is blowing, the lake freezes in waves! Makes it uncomfortable at times for the snowmobilers Unless there is a good covering of snow.

We surrounded ours with galvanised netting at our last house to keep otters out and it also made it safe for our dogs.
We set the netting back about 8ft so we could get lawn tractor around perimeter for maintenance.

Why not get a couple of long lunge leads while lake is frozen a bit of lead work never does any harm?

Your all very kind but the question was not how to deal with the ice but where can we go to run the dogs within an hour of York with the motorhome

Thanks

They do love it for sure. Swim like otters but this is a bit different ( terrifying)
I am sure.ni would feel the same with my dog.

I would love to have my own lake to swim in myself, cannot imagine anything better.

Is there anything suitable around the castle Howard area?

We stayed at a campsite about 30 minutes walk away from castle Howard and when taking the dogs out I noticed a parking spot where you could get a Motorhome in, in the area.

Use extending leads. They can still have a good run on those.

The Knavesmire might do. Lots of room and lots exercising dogs.

How do you know there won't be a frozen lake where you go to?

I've never been anywhere near your location but I found this on Google Maps. Right near you........

Paw Park. Sand Hutton. Specifically for dogs. Fenced.

You don't need to be logged in to Faecesbook to see it. I've never used FB.

Winter!

Actually just been looking on search fir sites and there are some pubs with big gardens where we could go for lunch and stay parked up for a while. Might give that a try

Hi.
Beverley Westwood ( Park ? ) is ,an open patch of ground, used to walk the dog there at times, when we lived at Wawne. As you come from York, the race course is on your left, the area of land on the right is the Westwood. Enjoy.
Be on your BEST behaviour !!! if you go....... Minxy might be up there as well. :ROFLMAO:

At this time of year dogs are allowed on Filey beach. Park at the south end car park and it’s a short walk down the valley to the beach. Also there’s no parking charges.
