Hi, am going to Santander on Brittany ferries and am asking how do I keep my freezer from defrosting, I realise I shouldn’t have food in it but I am still asking !!

You can have food in it. No one seems to check these days
Freeze a few small bottles of milk and use them to keep the fridge cold. The added benefit is that you will have decent milk to drink.

I let ours defrost, the temperature came up to around zero with some less dense foods defrosted totally (but still cold)
Then the next drive refroze everything. We didn't get ill 😎

Best option is to drive through France but that's probably an unhelpful answer 😁

Several 1 litre plastic coke* bottles nearly filled with water and frozen.
In a sealed chilled fridge it should take 24hrs to thaw out.

Just chuck the bottles into the recycling on arrival at the other end.

* Other sizes and other fizzy beverages are available. Just make sure you leave enough space for ice expansion, otherwise the top will get forced off when it freezes

Over kill but we have 200 amps of Lithium and a Victron 12/2000/80 inverter charger its set up so we can run the fridge from the inverter if required. we run the fridge on its coldest setting (EHU) the day before we leave when boarding the ferry we set it to one light (Dometic three way not compressor) and turn the inverter on also run a Dometic CX35 freezer box on 12 volt at -10c. Batteries are above 50% on arrival in Santander from Plymouth. Done this several times we take some food so fridge is around 75% full/

I packed 4 x 1.5 litres of frozen water and 2 litres of frozen milk.
Both Still partially frozen after 4/5 days.

Because of long-term health nonsense, eating out can be difficult for me and therefore I take a lot of my own (cooked at home) food with me when away in the van. Portions of curry, dahl, bolognaise-type sauces and so on, frozen in Lakeland square tubs make excellent replacements for bottles of water or those blue 'freezer blocks' with the benefit that I can eat the contents when they have defrosted so it is not wasted space.

I have taken over a week's food with me this way and as it takes so long for the blocks to defrost have never managed to make myself ill. ;)

OK, this won't suit anyone who wants to eat out most days, but it does help keep the fridge cold if you have to turn it off.
