Although we don't do many campsites in france I do find the French aire system to be excellent. Search for sites is my currant favourite app.

When are you travelling…?
We're catching le shuttle on 12 September, don't want to do Aires, I've heard some bad reports and would prefer to use sites

Noirmoutier in that area(ish) is a great place to send a few days, one of my favourites. If you’re feeling adventurous cross to the island on the tidal road - ‘Passage du Gois’.

As others have said don't overnight or leave the van unattended on Motorway ( Pay or free) service areas or aires as they are signposted Other aires are great in the main and most towns and villages will have dedicated motorhome parking areas or waste disposal, look for a sign with a picture of a motorhome on and a water/waste picture underneath White with a blue border

If you can stretch to Blaye on the Gironde I can enthusiastically recommend the ancestral home of the Marquis Vauban.

This chap was responsible for creating many of the fortresses throughout France and was given the title accordingly.

You can park in the front garden, get 16amp EHU, have a wine sampling in the house itself and get change out of €10.01 (you work it out.)
The Aire de Vauban, just to rub it in is opposite the Council Aire which is all very nice But!

We stopped at Camping Le Beaulieu in La Rochelle last year - not the most scenic site, it’s on the outskirts and in a retail area - but there’s a good bus service into La Rochelle. And there’s a very good boulangerie just over the road!

I think you're referring to motorway aires, which you shouldn't really use for overnighting.

The vast majority of municiple aires, or those run by Camping-Car Park, are perfectly safe :)

The bad aires are the motorway ones. The aires in the towns and cities are fine.

We’ve just done 6 weeks in Aires in Normandy, Brittany and the Loire.

Campsites tend to be for caravans, which are towed by cars, so are out of town. Aires de Camping Cars are in the middle of towns, or within walking distance.

As long as you don’t stop on motorway Aires you’ll be fine. 👍

If you are doing campsites in September, make sure you get the ACSI card - it will save you a fortune. Most of the sites in the Ile de Rey are good.

There’s a brilliant Aires on the Ile de Oleron, right in the middle of the main town.

Some campsites will start to close down at the end of September especially in the north of France,
Get the apps “search for sites” and park 4 night, they will give you camping as well as Aires. ( Aire du Campingcar )
Read the reviews on aires as some are in very pleasant places some are free and some paid for…
Some of the best places I’ve stayed at have been on free aires and in 8yrs and months at a time in Europe have never seen any trouble…

In Spain they are Area Autocaravanas and most are free with services and perfectly safe…
As have been said stay away from overnighting in motorway services…

Have a great time and keep us updated..🍻
