I'm in zaragoza at the moment and as far as I can see the tolls have been lifted all the way east to Barcelona then south down the coast.

Is this correct? And if it is...

Then how does it work? Do you stop at the booths and take a ticket anyway or are the gates always left open and just drive through?

The only toll we saw was when we left Santander to Benidorm.
We didn’t go through any on our journey north home from Benidorm to France.

Are sat navs clever enough to know if a toll road is free? In other words will it put you on a free toll road even if you have them set to avoid?

I set mine to avoid from santander to zaragoza. Then changed it to allow tolls from zaragoza to where I am now. It put me on the AP-2 which I believe used to be tolled although I saw no signs of previous toll booths.

Maybe been completely removed now.

Well I've not long ran in to a peage barrier demanding around €4. I'd drove from near Lleida to Vilanova so no idea what toll I hit.

Ach well needs must.
