Hi. Has anyone used a French 'Free Mobile' SIM? Says 19.99 euros per month with no contract for 250gb. Normally use Vodafone but tends to cost us 150 quid for a 4 week holiday. Any views? Cheers

They also apparently roam to other EU countries better than a UK sim too from what my friend who lives in FR says. Still have data limits but better ones than a UK sim would have.

We plan to get one on arrival or have John (our friend) activate one and us pickup from him as we pass his house.

Great thank you. Been looking online, you can buy from UK but still a French SIM. I'm only hesitating as we visit Belgium regular as well but that would then be classed as roaming and you are limited to 35gb, but I don't know over what period

35Gb is way better than a UK sim which would get 12 ish if it's a 3 based contract ! No idea on roaming periods for such a sim, we plan to just do France for our first trip so will suit us fine.

The only issue we had was when we tried to cancel the recurring monthly payment. Being French you have to write to them via recorded delivery to cancel but they don’t publish their address so it became difficult. Eventually got our French friend to do it for us as we were going round in circles.

Yes, have used for the last 2 years. We do 2 10 week trips to France each year, spring and autumn. Got from Free shop in supermarket and they set it up for me to give me 3 months at 25gb (now 250). When I got back to Uk I used the app to change to the €2 euro monthly. When back to France later that year and using the app switched back to 250gb. Did it again this year. i don’t mind paying €2 pm just to save the hassle of getting a new sim every time I go over. It changes from €2 to 250by the next day but you need to have it running for 3 months to switch back to €2.

No issues with reception and the 250gb also gives you 35gb in the uk.

My ID pay monthly sim on 3 gives 30gb roaming.

If going to Belgium a lot have you looked at Belgium sim's?

Another one worth looking at is IQ mobile you pay £20 a year for the sim and £20 a month for 100gb and just buy a month at a time when you want. Has the advantage you haven't got to keep messing about with different sim's.

We have used it quite a lot. It works really well and you can get it dispensed by a machine in any of their outlets, usually in the large shopping centres. You can check on line where they are. The only downside is that it lasts just one month and you then have to buy a new SIM. Make sure a member of staff registers it for you before you leave their shop. It's a good idea to take your phone or router in to the store as they seem quite happy to set it up as you will need to add the FREE APN.
Search in the forum and you will see more detailed responses ... We didn't use it outside of France so can't comment on that.

Have you considered Starlink .... £80 a month on roaming, all you can use data and you can suspend the contract after the month is up. I understand that you can pick up a £199 refurbished starlink ....

I've shared my starlink connection for free with quite a few other motorhomes when on our travels and parked up next to them (despite doom and gloomers offering lots of reasons why I shouldn't). When we had our statics, I set it up to supply internet to three adjacent family caravans, all three were streaming TV etc at the same time!

Another alternative is a Reglo sim in France. We normal pick the sim up in the E.Leclerc supermarket and costs around 20 euro for 250Gb😀

I’ve just looked and their roaming limit is 22gb.
I don’t know if any French ones give higher roaming

Month on month

How do bundles work?

Our bundles are standard monthly allowances which usually run from the 1st of each month and renew on the 1st of each month (although some customers may have different renewal dates)
When you have a bundle and a credit allowance, usage is always taken from the bundle first and then your credit balance
Once your bundle has exhausted you will not be able to use outbound calls, SMS or data unless you have a credit balance. If you have a credit balance you will be charged our standard rates of 5p/min, 5p/SMS and 1p/MB data until your bundle renews
You can move bundles at any time by purchasing a new one through the website
You can have as many as 10 paid bundles on your account but only a maximum of 1 FREE bundle
If you would like to retain an existing bundle when adding a new one please state this in the comments section on checkout
Subscription bundles automatically renew until cancelled by you in your online account by going to My account>My subscriptions>View details>Cancel Subscription

Yeah that fits

I think the issue I've had when roaming with similar other providers (native EE contract, native 3, resold 3 under a TT I think it was contract) is they just don't perform as well as the actual network I'm roaming to's own sims. The data amount is useless if it works "badly"

Thats why I like the French Free ones (and why my friend who actually lives in France also does). You will get the same "network" priority level as a French person on the same deal, which you cannot ever say for roaming.

It's similar in my book to how if you test in UK a 3 business, a 3 personal and a smarty contract, all on same cell tower. The former will outperform the latter two typically from my personal tests on same equipment in same location, despite them all being "owned" by 3. The networks DO have network prioritisation typically but how it works depends on the network, and in some regions they all do get the same priority, but in US recently my t-mobile esim outperformed my Three sim roaming to T-mobile on same device..

Currently using IQ Mobile GO.
£20 for the card.
Add 100GB for £20 which lasts a month.
If you use it all within the month just pay another £20 for 100GB qanmd it resets the month start date.
When we go home we stop paying until next trip but we still have an active SIM ready to go.

Worked fine in France Germany and Spain, no connection issues and no throttling as far as we can tell.

Another thing is that your IP is in the UK so BBC, ITV etc all play without needing a VPN!

Can’t advise on that one. Both the app and the website have an option to terminate but as I’ve not tried I can’t say how easy. If you’re not going to re use and you’re buying in a Free store just tell them how long you need it and it will expire unless you renew.

They will ask for a French address, I just gave them the address of a campsite I wasn’t even staying at. TBH shop staff are selling so they will make it easy.
