I’m going to France for up to 90 days in April and researching the best way to satisfy my need for mobile data.

In the UK I have a Smarty unlimited sim in the van which I activate and suspend depending on my travels. Smarty will only give me 12gb although I know there are other monthly renewable providers where you can get 20gb. I want more but don’t want to be tied into a long term contract.

Thinking there must be a similar French version I’ve come across Free, a French mobile provider. They have a deal just now and from what I can understand it’s monthly renewable and for €19.99pm you get 210gb.

Has anyone come across this, of have a Free sim?

What I’m trying to understand is
  1. If I order online will they accept and post a SIM card to the UK?
  2. When I leave France can I cancel the agreement online?

I can only see an option to phone them for assistance but I don’t speak France to the level to discuss this. I was hoping to be able to use google translate and email but don’t see an email address.

If no one knows the above I can always wait till I get to France and visit one of their stores but I’d prefer to have it sorted before I go.

Thanks for any help on this.

Yup, saw that. I’m in the UK though.

Also I don’t want the pre paid sim, it’s the monthly renewable one I’m after.

Hi Andy, we had the Free unlimited sim for 4 months whilst in Frqnce, cost 19.99 per month.

We just popped into a Free store in out first few days, spoke with the assistant using translator app, and they sorted it for us. Within 10 mins we in possession of the sim card.

Can use the app to renew monthly and if you don't, it cancels.

Info here:

Check where you can use them to call to/from as it think they exclude calls to mobile phones outside of France.

Get a sky one, no limits and you can piggy bank unused gb

Thanks Fulham Dave, good to hear you had success with it.

My sister in law is French and has just read the T&Cs and commented as below. Typical French, have a rule and ignore it. 🤣

Looks brilliant however the Devil is in the detail. Unfortunately you have to be resident in France or have a suitable link with France (un lien stable). Don’t think a French sister in law will work.

French contracts of any sort are notoriously difficult to get out of and this one is no exception. You have to notify them in writing, by registered post 10 days in advance.

Apparently there are very few machines - one in paris one in Nice and possibly one in dieppe airport, close to the ferry.

Yes there are terminals BUT you then pay €10 for the card (with no credit).

You can get a RegloMobile card from Leclerc supermarkets. You will need your passport to get one. There are allsorts of sim only deals on monthly payments. I hope this helps Broken Link Removed

That looks good for France 100gb for €14.95 and reduced speed if you go over 100gb but only 8gb roaming.

I don't like being tied in to a contract so I use a Three Mobile sim card with my Maxview router - valid in all European countries. I get 24gb data that lasts for 24 months. You can either top it up (not easy when abroad) or simply buy another sim (cheaper). Maxview sell them for around £45 but Amazon had them on offer at £34.99

Some years ago we had a PAYG French data sim from a network called Dave (sadly no longer available, they were swallowed up by Virgin France.). You had to provide a French address but they were known to never check it or send anything to it - I just got a business address out of the Michelin guide, which appeared to work fine.

HKF , do you have one of those? Are you able to suspend or cancel from their web site or app?

They are so expensive now and only a weeks use for us.

Hi. Yes, I do have one. I don't use it much but I'll have a look and see what I can and can't do with it. I'll get back to you :)

We used a regulomobile sim about 6 years ago and it worked well. I'd be interested to know if it can be used in a mifi device as it appears that you can use it throughout the EU.

Hi again. You can cancel your contract by writing to Reglo Mobile (it's France :D ) OR you can cancel your direct debit and let the account expire. Below are the screen grabs with this information in English. I can't find any way to cancel online but this isn't unusual in France. The French LOVE paperwork! :D

Another option might be to take the €9.95 option (£8.28 today) and just let it run, using it when you need to. You'll get 60gb for that amount.

I hope this helps. If I can help any further, please shout :)

Weve been using mobile.free.fr sim. 210gb for €20. Best thing is that you can buy the sim from dispensers in corner shops etc. Just use any address near the machine as being yours, connect, enter pin (1234) and away you go. We are getting between 60 and 70 meg downloads on 4g which is pretty good.

Went into a Free store at the Carrefour at Evreux yesterday and got a 210gb per month sim. €19.99 for the first month €5 for the sim plus €5 tax so more expensive than above but I hadn’t seen any vending machines.

With the assistance of google translate conversation function the assistant loaded the sim in a spare phone and registered the sim. I then put it in my motorhome WIFi router. Had to re set the APN to get it working (APN is Free, username and password blank). I did need to quote a French address.

Super fast, better than either the Smarty or ASDA sims I used in the uk.

Still to set up the web site log in, I need to renew the day before expiry each month or it expires. Hoping that when I suspend it it can be reactivated as we hope to come back to France late summer.

Yes we used for the first time on our trip to Portugal for most of April and it was spot on and connected every time we required it in tandem with Nord VPN😊👍

Just been reading through the thread, it gets a bit highjacked in places but I've got through most of it. Just one question if you dont mind, is the ordering all done by email or can this be ordered online?

Hi Andy MacD Glad you got away ok. I’m watching this with interest & will await to see how you fare at the end of your tour Re suspending it.

Does it allow you to roam freely in the rest of the EU too?

enjoy, Roy 😊

Just an add on Camino will set up an account for you so that they are able to invoice you and you can pay by any card you want it’s very straight forward and easy😊

I just got a text from 3mobile, which will no doubt be followed by everyone else: for the princely sum of £60 a month (or as they put it, Just £2 a day) I can use my home allowance (unlimited in UK) in europe. The catch? So called Fair Use of a miserly 12 gb per month. Who on earth will pay £60 for 12gb when you can get 200gb for €20 from FreeMobile etc etc. ?
