My son is looking at motorhomes but many of them have ford engines. What are your thoughts as regards to reliability ,any advice would be welcome.
 
I would say that Ford would be the minority 🤔

That said they also appear to be high on the easily nicked models 🤔

Fiats have crap gear boxes

Mercedes cost a lot to service and have low mpg

The others don’t seem to be an issue 😁

Our Peugeot motorhome is fitted with the 2.2ltr Ford Puma engine which uses a cam chain rather than a cam belt that needs replacing after a set number of miles
Mine too, been great. 9 years old and 45k miles (peugeot boxer van)

I think with upgraded door security, plus a Vanbitz Strikeback Growler Alarm & Meta Tracker, I would choose the Ford Transit over everything else.
Unfortunately I wasn't given the option 6 years back.

Ford Transit times 2 from new. Neither were stolen (to date)

I wonder why Ford Transit sell 100,000 motors a year in this country

Isnt there an issue with injector failures in later transits?

I personally would avoid anything with adblue.

Did not know that but in saying that a brand new sunlight came on the aire yesterday and it sounded different
I noticed the Dethleffs at Goodmans earlier in the year when I took the van in for it's water ingress check.
They look a bit old fashioned with the Ariel on the bonnet. The internal colour scheme is also very dark.
I think the decision to use them was more to do with the shortage of Fiat chassis.

I think they are very reliable and although some have issues the percentage of good v bad is no different to others.
I would be more concerned about any differences in insurance costs as they are popular for being stolen and not to difficult to steal.

Yes, bad batch of fuel injectors that kept failing, it was from approx 2017. - 2020.
It’s now been corrected however there’s no telling when they will fail if it’s the bad batch.

Example - this year in may iur 2020, 3000ml injectors went!!!
Very frightening experience in Spain, van got taken back to Salamanca and spent 5 days in garage !!
We were put up in good hotel and Ford paid 2k bill - comfort ins very good thou .
But in a rush they nearly damaged van !
It was all a nitemare tbh but we must say our Ford is brilliant and pulls n runs a dream would purchase another Ford 👍

I have posted recently about my Ford. Fuel injectors corroded due to water ingress at just over 4 years old and 20000 on the clock. I have had to fit a tray over the engine to divert the water. Also the second time out in it someone had a pair of pliers to the door lock and twisted it off. Again easily sorted by changing the lock.
Saying that it is a lovely drive.

I have been advised my timing chain should be changed on my Caddy, it's done 18,000 miles. Think there is also an age limit. My caddy is a 17 plate.

What a nightmare! The faulty fuel injectors were fitted 2019/ 2020. Mine was earlier than that as a 68 plate so not the faulty batch but due to water ingress. Fortunately my injector went a mile from home. Let’s all share photos of our fords on flat bed trucks 😂

It’s the 2.0ltr EcoBlue from 2016 with the ‘wet belt’ system that’s problematic. Degenerating belts, blocked oil pick up leading to oil starvation, turbo failure.
A builder friend of mine bought his 2016 Transit 2.2 with cam chain from his friend who upgraded to the newer 2.0litre. The 2016 has been faultless whilst the 2.0litre one has been an expensive unreliable nightmare.

Thanks for all the replies I’ll show him this thread but it seems to me he should avoid the 2019/2020 models because of the injectors. Anybody have any thoughts on the newer engines

with regular oil changes a cam chain should last the life of a vehicle or 200,000 miles in my experience , so long as the tensioner mechanism is in good order and as I said regular oil changes ....However some vehicles do have poorly designed Cam chain systems , Certain BMW cars especially which are prone to failure due to cost cutting and design errors .

Fiats can have rusty injectors too though.

I dont think Ford engines are any worse than my belt driven, manual Fiat...... and the standard locks on the Fiat are nothing to be proud of either. But if we're talking automatic Fiats, then thats a whole different issue ...

They must be reliable, as can be observed in this area of Surrey where seemingly hundreds of them are trawling about the county. However, these nearly always have the greedy boards on the side and three swivel necked occupants looking for any opportunity to, rob,steal or cheat the unwary out of their property or money with their well honed patter. Always look for a land line number with a verifiable local code on any " trade " van that knocks unsolicited at your door, with offers of , carpet, tarmac, hedge cutting, rubbish clearance, knives for sale, or leather jackets, the last two usually accompanied by a fake Italian accent.

Strange isn't it , people talking about failing ford diesels , all the fancy things they do to engines now you would think they would never fail.
The old banana ford engine transits would just run and run for ever, you couldn't break them, so where have they gone wrong?

They had to fit all sorts of very clever gizmo's to make them clean.

The Germans turned the modern diesel engine into a technological marvel ...but they still had to add cheat software, to get it through the EU's tests....
