Food to France

Mrs CC will be loading up food in the van to the gunnels for our upcoming trip as she did last October when we went away.
We will however be bringing loads back as we did on our last tripšŸ˜šŸ˜

I am pretty law abiding on most things but not when itā€™s a stupid political based oneā€¦

Have to say that I am veering towards this view for the few things that you simply can't get in Italy and struggle to find in France. For the rest, I just googled a hyper market on my route for the first day (in this case Carrefour in May and LeClerk in Aug) and will stock up with fresh.

What I don't get is that UK standards for meat quality, animal welfare & hygiene are higher than the EU. To get reciprocals with EU over than this would probably only require a middle grade civil servant phoning an opposite number in Brussels - unless of course, it is just a bit of spite.

Surely not.

I went over last year with all the usual food stuff and nobody seemed to be bothered. I think they are more concerned your covid documents than anything else.

We went over last August with all our usual supplies on board, including a freezer full of bacon and sausage for our son as the bacon and sausage in France are not as good as ours. Particularly the bacon.
Nobody checked or even asked about the contents of our fridge, freezer or cupboards. They definitely didnā€™t set foot inside our motorhome.
There are a few on here that obviously abide by the very letter of the law in every aspect of their lives and take great pleasure in decrying those that see the law more as guidance. Iā€™ve found it best to have absolutely nothing to do with these types. It makes life much more relaxed and pleasurable not having to worry about halos slipping.

Hardly bothered about that stuff most of the time. Having spent ages doing tests and filling in health declarations and covid passes, we were asked verbally if we were fully jabbed, and had we been tested. No showing of anything, never mind fridge inspections. Think you would have to be really unlucky.

Iā€™m not off to France but I am however considering sticking some bacon down my underpants. Thoughts??

currently we do have those high standards but these are predicted to slip as we do food trade things like hormone fed cattle etc. so coming out of the EU we are being treated as any other 3rd country no spite involved, just process.

That gets trotted out ad nauseam but doesnā€™t actually address the issue. Are you really saying that it is OK to ignore / modify any laws you donā€™t like?

how about child abuse - got a level thatā€™s OK?
Think we are talking g common sense and morality, ,Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone,,,BUSBY.

Not just 'high standards', but 'higher standards'.

Who is predicting food standards to slip? UK food production and importation standards are EU retained laws and hormones in UK food is currently banned in law, so any changes to food standards will require a change of law. Such laws are more robust than that in the EU, so if standards do slip, they will likely still be better than that in the EU.

There is concern about a future US trade deal where hormone-injected beef and chlorine-washed chicken are included. No problem with the chicken. Chlorine washing is used in many foods in EU that we eat daily, such as salads and fruit. It doesn't make it taste any different and frankly, is just vegan-hyped alarmist nonsense - mainly because they want to stop everyone eating meat.

Hormone beef or lamb I won't go near though. And it is easy, because the country of origin must be shown on the label. So, if you don't want to eat hormoned beef, you can continue to eat UK meat, just be reading the label.

So going back to the OPs point, you have to ask that, since we have retained the EU food safety laws as a minimum, why is the EU being so difficult about it? Unless someone is going suggest that they are penalising UK because we have HIGHER standards?? o_O

I will be crossing with a couple of packs of frozen British sausages and a couple of bacon. Everything else I can get in France & Italy. This EU law is illogical, dogmatic, somewhat spiteful and typically protectionist. I have no problems in taking a couple of lb of UK meat over.

One would hope the high standards remain. We are out of the EU whether we have higher standards or not is irrelevant, their rules and their standards so no we are not being penalised just having the rules applied to those outside of the EU which is fair enough, have to say there are many Brits who enjoy a good German Sausage I know this as I have seen many queuing up at stalls in the Market. I also suspect many people have had a local food establishment closed down or one they do not want to go to.

ā€œWe are seeing a decline in the livestock industry and would be asked to carry out so many improvements by the Environment Agency, <Broken link removed> and Food Standards Agency going forward, that it is completely unviable,ā€ said managing director Terry Hawkes.
ā€œWe just canā€™t put up with the rules, regulations and red tape any longer.ā€
