Has anyone had any recent expedience of being checked (or not) for meat and dairy in Santander?

went thru 3 weeks ago no checks at all. they did pull a few car caravans over in front of me.

This is what is (and isn't) allowed when entering the EU.

Rules when travelling from a non-EU country

If you travel to the EU from a non-EU country, you are not allowed to bring any meat or dairy products with you. You can however bring a limited quantity of fruit and vegetables as well as eggs, egg products and honey. Restricted quantities of fish or fish products are also allowed.

ProductAmount per personAdditional restrictions
Eviscerated fresh fishery products, or prepared or processed fishery products20 kg or 1 fish (whichever weighs most)
Fishery products from the Faroe Islands or Greenland
Goods, other than plants for planting and other than fishery products, coming from the Faroe Islands or GreenlandTheir combined quantity does not exceed the weight limit of 10 kg
Plants or plant products including cut flowersA phytosanitary (plant health) certificate is required attesting that the product is free from certain specific pests
Powdered infant milk, infant food and special foods required for medical reasonsNo more than 2 kg
  • do not require refrigeration before opening
  • are packaged proprietary brand products for direct sale to the final consumer
  • that the packaging is unbroken unless in current use
Pet food required for health-related reasonsNo more than 2 kg
  • are intended for the pet accompanying the passenger
  • are shelf-stable (do not require refrigeration)
  • are packaged proprietary brand products for direct sale to the final consumer
  • that the packaging is unbroken unless in current use
Products other than those described above which do not contain meat or milk (e.g. honey)2kgNone

You won't find it written anywhere but seems? that if the non allowed food is for your own consumption, then you won't get the 'wagging' finger.

Smile sweetly and carry on.

We entered Spain at Santander at the start of November. No interest at all at what was in the van, never looked, but we were pulled over because we had a dog after passport control and before leaving the port. The dog's microchip was read, her EU passport was examined and they had a printed list that they checked her against.

Ah but did they have a look what food you had on board for her? :giggler:

No checks on foodstuffs at all when we arrived at Santander last month.
Interestingly though, when we crossed the land border between Gib and Spain with some milk which we bought as it was quite late in the day, we were told by the Guardia Civil officer that it was prohibited for the same reason as UK originating dairy products are.
I told him I needed it for my morning coffee fix and he relented with a smile and let me take it through.

Ironically, the milk we purchased in Gib is Spanish but on the Gib/Spain border rules are rules are rules!

Having just returned to Southampton after a 2 week cruise I was astounded to be confronted with 6 tables manned by Border Force where usually there are none. Pulled and questioned about free allowances and then waved through. Now I thought Excise Duty enforcement was the domaine of HM Customs not Border Force!
So that's 20 Border Force Officers not available for spotting the illegals running along the the top of the containers from the ships offloading in the Port. These are nightly seen and footage posted on Youtube with embarrasing regularity. What a totally misplaced operational deployment of recources!

He has his own passport so isn't 'accompanying me'.
Never had our fridge checked ever!
We never had our passports ,or anything, checked leaving the UK . I suppose we are still classed as being there?

I don't think there is an illegal immigrant problem as you describe in Southampton docks.

UK Border force are responsible for checks at ports etc.

“Border Force is a law enforcement command within the Home Office. Border Force secures the border and promotes national prosperity by facilitating the legitimate movement of individuals and goods, whilst preventing those that would cause harm from entering the UK. This is achieved through the immigration and customs checks carried out by our staff at ports and airports. Our officers work at 140 sea and air ports across the UK and overseas.”
