We are planning a trip to New Zealand early next year and are currently researching flights.

We are contemplating paying to upgrade to Premium Economy, to make the flight more comfortable.

Who have you flown with recently & been happy with and are there any airlines to avoid?

We've heard good reports about Emirates as an airline and also their Premium Economy but who else do you use, how does their Premium Economy compare & is it worth the extra cost?

Many thanks

Cathy Pacific is good and also good value. Far better than Emirates or Etihad which we always hated.
South china airlines is amazingly cheap and gets good reviews. They do business class for the price of everyone else's premium economy. Not tried them but would do if we were going back to NZ

Last two times I went to Australia the flight was going on to New Zealand, I used Emirates changing at Dubai, absolutely fabulous. Agree with comments above, any upgrade you can budget for is very much worth it.

I visited with Air NZ . They did a good deal with domestic flights and onward return flight to Australia with round-the-world ticket - including stopover in Los Angeles. I recall most of their cabin crew were ‘mature’, no big deal, just a bit different to many.

We flew Korean Air via Seoul. Well priced and great service

Another note of caution - since Covid most airlines have had to reconfigure their offering.
Whatever the class of travel, the food, drink & crewing levels might not be as 'generous' as they once were.
Something to keep in mind when reviewing airline reputations from a few years ago.

Air New Zealand for us as well.
Inter Airline flights have a novel idea of a quiz running on the in flight entertainment. But, they did misplace our main suitcases for two days, and amend a flight time at 02.00 for an 06.00 flight, which we missed but they just put us the next flight, which actually overtook our original flight!!

Air New Zealand for me. We've only ever flown via LAX, but I believe they now also go 'the other way' via Hong Kong..

I flew with Malaysian Airlines via Kuala Lumpur, I had a stopover in Malaysia to break the journey; Because of this they offered me a free internal return flight which I took to Penang after staying the night in a 5 star hotel at Kuala Lumpur for £10, stayed at a Penang beach front hotel for 4 nights at £9 a night at Batu Ferringhi.
Arrived in NZ fresh and ready to enjoy its delights.
Stopped off at Kuala Lumpur on the return and stayed at the airport hotel before continuing to London the next day.
While planning the trip I decided that my stop over options were KL in Malaysia, Soule in S Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok in Thailand. For me it was a no brainer as I'd studied Malaysia for my O level geography.
The airline were brilliant, and despite recent history I'd use them again. A stop over is a must (y)

Also look at Quantas.
Very good airline the times I have flown with them.

I'm booked Emirates Business Class to AKL in November - out of Stansted, which makes the fare slightly less painful... and Premium Economy on the way back.

One thing to keep an eye on is transit times.
Do you still have to do a change in Aus?

Have you tried any of the Cathy, Malaysia, Korean airlines?

What did Emirates do to upset you....? I've always considered them to be about the best (Business class) .... a good way infront of Singapore and far away in front of Korean......the Chinese airlines I've used have only been 'localish' but very forgettable as were Japans airline Tokyo to London......

Just looked at South China Airlines. They only show prices for cattle class. Nothing fancy :(

I'd consider if there are places you'd be interested in visiting on the way and see what companies offer stop offs there... And back... You might find different options with different companies going there and the return. There are fascinating places to visit to break up the journeys there and back.

Air New Zealand - go via LA. They also do LA to Roratonga (stop for a few days), then Roratonga to Auckland. 👍
