Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I hope that some of you may be able to help me with my summer trip through Europe later this year? We are quite new to owning a motorhome and this is our first adventure outside the UK. I have booked ferries and campsites, but I haven’t looked in too much depth at my routes. My route will take me through France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. I am mindful that toll roads will be quicker and my preferred routes so I’m looking for any tips or suggestions that would help me. There will be 2 adults and 3 children travelling in a 6 berth motorhome (H 3.05m, W 2.24m, L 7.34m. Max laden weight 4005 KG).

Thanks in advance,

Mark .S

Welcome! You will need various toll boxes to get through Switzerland and Austria. I can't advise as we are sub 3.5t but a search on here will turn up the information I think. Alternatively, some kind soul will explain the systems on this Thread. :) Switzerland is stunning but the campsites can be expensive. If you are doing this in June get the ACSI books and card for the off-season discounts.

I suggest Metz and Lucerne to be good stops along the way, and mostly toll free, calling in at Luxembourg for cheap diesel along the way.
For Switzerland and Austria you will need to pay a toll, Austria you will need a go box unless you avoid motorways. Switzerland is a little more simple, just pay at border.
Italy tolls are pay at booth for motorway and reasonable.
Research on here where there is lots of info if you do a search.
Most on here don't bother booking sites but with children it's probably a good idea.
Apps such as camper contact, search for sites and park for night give info on aires for stops along the way.
That's a long journey if they're young children, how long do you have for the trip ?
Enjoy the scenery it's stunning.

Other Bre#it stuff to consider is you may need a green card from you insurance company and maybe a European driving license ?
Or is it all project fear ?

As you are over 3500Kg, you will need to pay for a Vignette for the privilege of driving on ANY of Switzerland's roads not just the motorways. (n) At any border crossing you can buy this, but you must stipulate how long you will stay irrespective of how many days you are on the road. There is also a minimum charge - cannot remember how much we paid, CHF 29 rings a bell,o_O but as we were just going to use the country as a short cut, the price would allow us to stay for 7 days. If you are travelling that side of France, cross into Belgium - test out your rattles and security of your glassware, through Luxembourg - as said for Diesel(y), Alsace region of France then into CH, Austria and Italy.

How long between ferries, as that will be a big factor on your route in view of distance traveled ?

Simple piece of advice, don't overthink thing's, take them as they come.

Welcome.... if you have the time over there I wouldn’t bother with the tolls as it would be quite expensive being over 3500kg plus you’ll be able to stop in better places with the kids with more options on things to do....

As others have said “Campercontact” downloaded on your phone tablet will give cheep safe options for stopping on route...

Get a good sat-nav and select “no tolls” and see some wonderful places.....(y)
