I’m new to Motorhoming but have been a keen camper with the family in the past
Hi everybody this is my first post on any forum so sorry if I’ve posted it in the wrong place. I’ve just bought my first Motorhome a Pilote V600G Premium. I need to fit a tracker for the insurance company and peace of mind. I’ve done my research on the internet but the bewildering choice of makes and contracts has worn me out. I’m losing the will to live🙂. It needs to be S5 or S7. So far I’ve been recommended Vodafone/Scorpion and SmarTrack. Thanks in advance for your kind help and advice.

Scorpion for me.
Does what it says on the tin. ✅

Ogh, And Welcome.

Vanbitz Growler Alarm, with Meta Tracker Non Start, makes any MH very, very difficult to steal, even on a low loader.
Yes check out Vanbitz website, they are The UK's best & recognised supplier/installer of MH security devices, with excellent service back up if needed, not cheap, but neither are vans these days.
You may have to wait for an appointment as we did, but it was well worth it.(y)

Hi Robcool.
I have the Smartrack fitted to ours been please with it , it was fitted to our MH when we purchased it , had to pay a transfer fee, then they replaced it free of charge when the tracker was updated, a few times I have drove off without cancelling the tracker and within a few minutes they have rang me to tell me its been move so it works well.

Another vote for VanBitz
Luckily for you they are only a couple of hours down the road.

Unlike most of the other trackers, their one is made specifically for motorhomes, and they are Thatcham approved.
Whilst you are there I'd get their alarm and engine blocker fitted as well.

They have a campsite next door, so you turn up at your leisure, and are ready for their fitters at 8am the next day.

They aint the cheapest, but they are the best!

Is it really, how can it be different tracking a motorhome compared to any other vehicle?

Some general advice after having technical van work carried out. I'm probably one of the very few people who had an issue post install of the Growler and Non Start. (I was well looked after and very happy with Vanbitz support BTW).

1. Don't get a Friday install, if you have problems, the weekend can feel like for ever to get things corrected on Monday.
2. Stay at the adjoining campsite for a couple of days post install. Makes things much simpler if there are any problems.
3. try pick a day with nice weather, then you can go off doing things whilst the van is getting its upgrade.

A motorbike can be put into a van & if screened will never be able to send a signal for its location to the tracker company. Cars and Vans will probably be the similar as each other for tracking. The difference will be the internal sensors, vans having large amount of doors, windows, hatches, Bike Rack etc.

But the question was re a tracker so surely windows and internal sensors does not come into it, if the OP wants the ShadowVTS I imagine they can get the same thing from their nearest Meta Trak dealer, personally we have Phantom and more than happy with it.

Quite right, that's why I put the bonus for 10 information at the rear of the response as there will be no difference in tracking that I can see.

I know you wrote a missive somewhere explaining the differences between a general alarm/tracker combo, essentially designed for cars and the metatrac/Growler system designed for motorhomes.

I'll leave it to an expert to reply

My comments are just re trackers as that is what the OP asked for, not alarms.

To answer this you need to break it down into 2 parts. There is the tracker & there is the alarm. I'm missing out the immobiliser :)

The tracker will be the same for any vehicle in principal. The difference will be, where do you hide it? Use GPS or Trigonometry tracking from mobile phone masts? Also there are active & passive systems. Some only phone home when they receive message to send their position. Very stealthy.

The Alarm will be a lot different as there are lots of different types of sensors and places when you want to put them. Tilt Sensors, reed switches, microswitches, volume sensors, ultrasonic etc etc.

I'm no expert, just spelling out some things I have seen. I can guarantee there are many more things I have no clue about :)

Phantom tracker and s7 immobiliser upgrade along with alarm, we are new to all this tech so had some false alarms, each time phantom control centre have been on the phone within 1 minute!!, cant rate the service highly enough, the whole kit was 1400 including a years subscription

Can Phantom view historical travel/routes like with Meta Track? I ask because not all features are obvious or even advertised. It was only after having the installation of Meta Track Non Start that I was shown the history of every stop & journey is recorded for ever. Example attached.

You need to check on the installation costs, the warranty for the kit and also the subscription fee, what is cheap to install may cost a lot for the subscription and vice versa.

We have a SmarTrack Protector Pro Global (S7) and haven't had any issues with it (installed 2019), it cost £199 to fit and £399 for lifetime monitoring so no more to pay for that. It came with a 3 year warranty and we've just extended it for a further 3 years for £99 ... BUT ... what you need to bear in mind is that this warranty is ONLY applicable for repairs etc carried out in the UK, so you have to sort it yourself if abroad, although they will try to help over the phone, or wait until you return to the UK to get it done. This goes for ALL UK tracker installations that I'm aware of.

If you want it to be constantly monitored you need an S5, if not then an S7 where you would advise them if it's moved for them to start tracking it.

As with all systems read the T&Cs before committing to make sure it is what you want and meets the terms of your insurer.

The biggest issue with trackers is who fits them and where in the van, most are fitted near or even connected to the OBD socket to the right of the steering column and get guess what, thats the first place they look and it’s so easy to rip the tracker out and bin it.
Vanbitz will never tell you where they have fitted their tracker and you will struggle to locate it, it works well and the app shows you where the van is and if you buy the immobiliser you can switch it on at any time further protecting the van.
The peace of mind having the Alarm, tracker and immobiliser gives me peace of mind.
