On 4th van so not a total newbie....
We are looking at taking 3 weeks in early september, and rather than just stay in France or Germany, would like to travel further afield, only ever had a weeks all inclusive to benidorm in the 80's so don't really know the area, any suggestions of areas to visit? We prefer coastal, not too busy, but some life, not bothered about entertainment or eating out.

Coastal Northern Spain will be beautiful that time of year, obviously depending on the weather which can be changeable in that area.

With only 3 weeks you will face either a quick drive through France, 2 days minimum to get a couple of weeks in Spain or make the drive through France part of the holiday and spend less time in Spain, either way my recommendation would be as above.

The alternative of course is the ferry to Santander or Bilbao which gives you more time in Spain and could then possibly venture further south, discount codes are available from myself........but other members are available:)

France - Germany -- Austria - Italy is a natural progression.

You choose - coast or lakes.

Bay of Roses, on the Med, not far over the French/Spanish border is very nice

Southern Portugal is a very long way for just three weeks unless you like driving a lot.

If you take the train across it is as said earlier a good two days driving to the Spanish border. A for me another two days minimum to reach the Med coast. We would get out of France ASAP as tolls, eating out etc is all much dearer than Spain.

In September you would almost be guaranteed sunny weather and warm evenings there.

We use the ferry to Northern Spain almost all the time now.

We would stop off on the way through Spain, inland is beautiful and well worth the effort in visiting. Aranquez and Albarracin are both favourites of ours.

If you fancy visiting your old haunts in Benidorm stay at Altea and get the bus in. Cap Blanch is ok, not great but right on the sea front and near to all the action. La Colina is a better site but a mile or so inland.
