Hi Funsters
We are off to Spain in 2 weeks via Santander. I’m on Google street view and cannot see a way out of the without going up very narrow streets. Last year we went via St Malo and the satnav constantly wanted me to turn right ( which I ignored) as I had done the route out of the town on street view so I don’t trust the satnav here either!
Any help appreciated as I don’t want to go around in circles thanks

They are doing a mass of work rerouting traffic out of the port; roadworks galore. It's well signed posted so just follow the masses and the signs.

PS setup your satnav but ignore it and your satnag, until well outside of the city ;) .

Hi. You may be looking at the entrance to the port.
The exit is at a different part of the port.
If you put your destination in your sat nav as you leave the boat, you should be directed to the exit after clearing customs.
Hope this helps.

Not sure what the roadworks are but we came home last October via Santander and went round to the North of the city on the S20 then back towards the port through Tunnel de Tetuan. It was pretty simple as I recall late PM on a Wednesday. Mainly dual carriageway. The port is close to the City Centre though so the roads are tighter.

As said there’s a lot of restructuring in the Port area - the exit is well signed and when we arrived a couple of weeks ago there were even a few guys with Red Wands pointing you the right way - don’t follow your Sat Nav!

Seems question is answered.

To add value if you are returning that way. I stayed on a free (Aire?) or what ever its called in Spain about 20-30min east of the port. It was a lakeside free camping spot. a few other motorhomes there.

Anyway. in the morning I went for a (yea really) electric skateboard ride to explore. And turned out it was next to an elephant reserve of all things. not 20 meters from me running with me essentially along the parameter were elephants!

Talk about dropping on a great spot without even knowing it.

Carbaceno, about 7 miles due south of the ferry if you're a crow. Looks a useful spot.

We finished up driving through a truck depot but made it. Trouble was we had about 6 vehicles following us.
Ha ha I think I ended up in the same one! Had to go right around the building and out again!

We were there last May. No problems getting out, but when trying to get back in, to go home, both our sat nav and Waze kept sending us around in circles. Seems they keep changing the entrance and exits. We will make sure we are in plenty of time this year!

I was there last month and now you mention it there were signs for 'port' that a lot of people might be inclined to take. You need to follow the signs for 'ferry' even if your sat-nav tells you to keep going.

Yep, on the return trip from Santander , there is a sign for Ferry that looks like it is going to take you into a car park just before the real ferry turn off. Could catch you out (like it did with us !)

We went through Santander to leave and return to the docks 6 months ago. We had never been to the port previously and found it a breeze road-wise as it was all dual carriage way. However, on our return, into the city, twat-nav wanted to take us a different route. We ignored it and followed signs to the ferryport

We used Santander on 11th May and again found it very straight forward to get out of the port and get on the main roads

Just follow the car in front.

You might end up in Tesco of course, but you should be ok.

Seriously it is well signposted and easy to exit from the port. No narrow streets

Was there a few weeks ago, one of the most organised exits from a port I have known, great through passport control and easy exit away from the port.

Main issue we found leaving Santander port was the speed!

I was expecting to spend half an hour in a queue going through passport control and customs, which would have given me enough time to set up the satnav for a new country and to put in the destination.

But no, straight off the ship, almost no stopping, wizz through the port and out onto a motorway.
No idea in what direction we were heading. No way to stop.

Eventually got the satnav up and running and in the new country and then dug out the details of our destination and programmed it all in.
We found by pure luck we were heading in the right direction (33% chance) and on a road that would get us to our destination.

Lesson learned:
Next time, whilst in the queue for the ferry in the UK, spend a few moments putting in your first destination in the new country.
It will give you some crazy route, but that does not matter.
(You can not do this whilst waiting on the ship, as there is no GPS signal, has to be done before you board)

What is important is when you next switch on the sat nav, and after a couple of minutes it figures out is seems to have moved several hundred miles from where it thought it was, it will give you the way out of the port and they way through an unfamiliar city to the main road system.

Follow the signs untill out of the port. I'd say you'll be driving maybe a mile before you are out if the port area, then follow your sat nav.
