I’ll probably take the air con of my new van to put more solar up there, what would be the best way to fill the void, I think the hole is 300 by 300mm.

Has anyone filled a hole…😉😎

I would expect the top of the hole will be quite easy to make good, the inside is a different story IMHO.

Yeah, I’m thinking of an alloy plate sikaflexed Down, painted and inside some cellotex or I’ll know what they’ve use for insulation when I take it out and replicate. But without replacing the whole roof covering which is a type of vynal putting something on the ceiling to disguise it…🤔

If you can take the outside off but leave the inside in situ it would be a lot easier to leave it looking good.

That’s a good idea but I’m thinking of selling it as it’s fairly new…

I expect it will be 400x400 I would be inclined to fit a standard roof light it will sill give you a lot more roof space than having the aircon up there. I reckon you could still get a 150/175 watt panel down the side of a standard roof light.

I expected it to be 400x400 Lenny but I was surprised at how small it was, I’m sure it looked 300x300..

As for skylight good idea, I’ll have to measure it all up when it’s on my drive…👍🏼

If you are after a rooflight I have a Fiamma one with a blind that was taken out to fit aircon.....
Price up for discussion. I was going to put them on the classifieds.
Van was less than 18 months old when the aircon was fitted so in great condition.

Lenny is right all Dometic apertures are 40cm x 40cm You have a ridged roof so the "flat" area will have been fabricated and raised to further complicate your plan!

Could you not put a raised solar panel over the top I see them often on self builds

Thanks for conformation Eddie, I suppose I was a bit further away sitting on the floor so it looked smaller..😆😂

What exactly do you mean by fabricated and raised..? Would that hinder the installation of a skylight or max fan..?

im sure most units are designed to either replace or replaced - I know Heki do a 300*3000

I want to take it off because I’ll have to be plugged in to ehu to use it and as I don’t do many sites it’s an ornament… plus I want as much solar so I don’t have to use sites…😎

I agree with Lenny a rooflight would be the best option, you could always do what Bryan BwB did fit a roofbars over the rooflight with a couple of big panels and it kept the roof cool and still opened a bit to allow ventilation. 😎

Looks a tidy van Garry, it's looking like Brazil will be put on the back burner this winter, see you when you get here. 😁 Bob.

Imagine a ridged roof, __--___--___-- The air con (or any other thing that needs a flat surface for the seal to work Max Fan for example) seal would only touch the "ridged" bits and water would piss in. So Dometic produced the adapter plate which is "bonded" to the roof, some times body filled and colour co-ordinated to provide a 40 x 40cm hole with a about 150mm flat surround for the neoprene seal to "squash" down on making it water tight.

Remember to test it works before you start to remove it - you should be able to sell it for a decent amount providing it is working :)

cheers,

Robin

I removed air con unit in one of my builds.Simply cut a pice of 2mm Ali plate four in’s bigger than the hole and stuck it in place with Puraflex 40 and used some 45 mm x 5 mm plastic to make up the ridges in the roof. Just like I would if fitting a roof light. Inside we were insulating and reboarding anyway. I have also in the past made a Patrice out of 12 mm furniture ply, edging it and put a couple of movable spot lights mounted onto the board that basically made a feature of covering a hole in the roof 👍Following he rule of if you cannot make it look right make it a feature😊

This was exactly my thinking…👍🏼

Mine's knackered so really just adding weight - this is my current plan, so hearing that it's worked is very useful, thank you.

Buy a large parasol type brolli, stick it up thro the hole, open it, tie a large brick to the hande to stop it moving.

then rest it on the roof

Sorted !:drinks:
