I would like to change from manual to automatic transmission (back problems making manual shift an issue) and it seems that I am seeing more Ford based homes with this facility. At the risk of starting a factional divide I wonder if other Members could help me with my decision?

Depends on how old you are buying, from 2021 both Ford and Fiat use a proper torque converter auto, before then the Fiat was a robotised manual and not very nice to drive.

The Ford base vehicle is good. Rides well, good engine, good auto box. They had issues with security a couple of generations back, by that was resolved long ago.

The Ducato used to have a Comfortmatic 6 speed robotised manual gearbox for the auto option. Many people are fine with it. Others say it's slow, clunky and unreliable. A few years ago (2020?) Fiat swapped to the 9 speed automatic, which is a more traditional torque converter type. Pretty much everyone loves it. It appears to be smooth, fast and reliable.

I can only vouch for the Fiat 9 speed as a very slick gearbox as an initial impression, I would even go as far to say it's better than my Volvo 8 speed Aisin auto box which has been also excellent and trouble free for 160k. As far as any sealed for life claims ignore that. Volvo claim theirs is sealed for life unless given heavy usage such as for towing or taxi use. As I tow a classic vehicle to shows I change the Volvo Auto box fluid every second year. I will be doing the same with the Fiat as in Campervan mode it will be fully laden for all it's working life and if hauling the max on a 4250 chassis the box is working hard and deserves regular fluid changes! I would also add that I have only as yet done 5k with the Fiat as I have only had it for 6 months so time will tell.

Is the Ford a Powershift the same as was in the Kuga or a proper auto with torque converter?
