Hi all,
I have a Fiat Ducato 130 multijet 2.3 2008 diesel.
Motorhome is in storage in countryside so very cold yesterday. I went to check it over as going away over Christmas holidays but when i put ignition on the glow plug light flashed for 30 seconds and went off, but it started fine. i took it for a run, about 5 miles and it run fine,no lights on dash. When i got back to storage yard i parked up and left it for 20 mins or so, put ignition on and glow plug light stayed on for 1 second (as normal) went off and it started no problem.
Is there a real problem or due to extremely cold weather? or warning that a plug maybe needs replacing?
Thank you in advance

I would guess that the colder the weather, the longer the heater plugs need. I know my Citroen, which is keyless and only requires a brief press on the starter button, waits several seconds this weather, before engaging the starter motor.

In cooler temperatures, the glow plug light will activate for up to 20 second. This is normal! 👍

Don't have any Ducato experience....
But IMV a glow plug is a glow plug which is designed to preheat cylinder of a diesel engine to assist in coldweather starting.
The colder the engine, the longer it will preheat ( light stays on) for..
Indeed many diesels I have owned in past have recommend in severe cold weather to wait a few seconds "after" light goes out before trying to start.

Yeah I understand that light stays on longer in colder weather but it was flashing, thought it was a consistent light so thought there could be an issue with a plug

Sorry , missed "flashing bit".
Quick Google search on various Ducato Forums would appear to indicate a potential glowplug failure.👍👍👍

Today's glow plugs are not as poppycamper describes although they were in the past.

Today, they are also used to warm the cylinder also after the ignition key has been turned, in the past, glow plug would stop operating after a certain time & temperature was reached before one turned the key but always best to check I suppose?

Mine is a 2008 model, with just ignition on the light flashes for 30 seconds and goes out, it then starts OK and runs OK and there are no lights coming on or flashing when I went for drive. It drove perfect. I bought it in July, the hottest day of the year and it has only been cold last few days. It's in storage in country side, out in the open.

I rest my case!

Mine is a 2007 X250 Ducato PVC, the only time I'm concerned is if, after starting, it flashes for longer than 20 seconds whatever the weather.
It never has! 🤞

Just remember to always allow the dashboard lights to complete it's run though sequence before turning key to start position.

Yes I'm hoping it was because it was very cold and I've not started it in really cold weather untill Thursday. I know glow plug light would stay static longer in icy conditions it was when it flashed for 30 seconds I was a bit frightened but after a run out when I tried it again the glow light stayed on for a second and it started. We going to lakes over Christmas holidays so I'm going to try it again today and see what happens 🤞
