HI All,

Having recently returned to the fold from a two year motorhome sabbatical, we are heading out to Europe in the summer. The van is a Fiat Ducato and comes with FIat camper assist for 2 years, is this enough cover for breakdown etc or should I look at another policy for break down cover on top of this.

Appreciate your thoughts

You can buy a 3 year extension to the camper assist BUT you can only buy it within 14 days of buying the van. Your dealer probably won't help but Adams Morey in Portsmouth will sort it out via phone/email. It will cost about £1K for the 3 years. Search on here for more info.
Oh, to answer your question (!) I only have it.

We have the Fiat 5 year (extended) warranty, which isn't the "camper" extended warranty but is a Fiat "commercial" extended warranty. I'm not sure what the difference is, although the commercial warranty is cheaper! I phoned up the Fiat assistance people and checked that the warranty came with 5 years breakdown and was told it did.
We also have breakdown cover via our Caravan Guard van insurance, that comes as standard and can't be removed.

I have used the fiat assist breakdown when the alternator went in France. Fiat were great, not so much their agents RAC who you need to ring for recovery.

I rely on the Fiat Camper cover and have 5 year warranty.
Whoever you use the service will down to how good the local agent is they contract to.

I also take the view that due to several reports on the forum where the breakdown service has taken the van to a dealer who are unable to fix the problem & the breakdown company then don't want to know.
By having the Fiat cover that problem hopefully should arise.

No you need a proper breakdown recovery service.

Camper Assist only assist. They do not do the full job. As Lenny says, they do silly things and then leave you totally stuck.
I think Lenny's saying the opposite of that i.e. he uses only the Fiat Camper warranty/breakdown and believes it to be the best option.

You have misread my post, I was referring to other breakdown companies.

I think you will find they offer a full service.
I've not read the latest policy but the last one I read it included repatriation & hotel costs. Apart from the UK where if it needed to be left at a garage for repair they would pay train fare home & to collect when repair complete.

Commercial vans have 3y warrantee as the 3rd year is sorted by the dealer, so its odd campervans only have 2. We were talked to about 3-5y upgrade and it was >£1000 and didn't take it.

Van is now 4.5yo and has had zero issues -so that £1000 can go towards its new cambelt in a few months

Cost us £952 but saved over £300 on breakdown cover so not that expensive.

Having a friend who had problems with his van a few months out of warranty, if Fiat hadn't paid for parts he would have had a £15k bull rather than £2k for labour.

Vans only get a 3 year warranty if they are UK purchased, UK converted Motorhomes get a 3 year warranty as the chassis is UK purchased.

Yes, I think I did misread your post.

However, when our 6 month old, Fiat Based A class motorhome just stopped on the M6, Fiat Camper Assist were useless. The contractor they used took our van to a garage who did not want it and did nothing with it for two months, leaving us to sort it out for ourselves.

When we puchased the motorhome, we were led to believe that Fiat Camper Assist woould fix the van if anything went wrong. The reality was a long, long, way from that.

So to answer the OP, Fiat Camper Assist is not enough cover for breakdown, etc. He should look for alternative cover.

I have recently read it Lenny after a similar thread as I started wondering about the repatriation bit as we’re off to Iceland in the Summer and didn’t think Comfort’s £10,000 would touch the sides! Our policy is up for renewal in March so we won’t bother with the Comfort breakdown one as Fiat say repatriation costs up to the value of the van.

Like you I think care on the day of breakdown is a bit potluck .

This will be perfect for any issue relating to the Fiat Camper Van. I had the EML come on whist en route back from Spain. It did not affect the Van at all. We stopped in a site in Perpignan so i rang Fiat Assist and told them the problem as i was concerned the EML might go into limp mode en route back to the UK. They called me back and i was told to take it to the Fiat Professional Dealer in Perpignan. They were very helpful and checked everything and cleared the EML. It was the (not uncommomn) Clutch Pedal Pressure Switch causing the Cruise Control/Stop Start to not work.
By the way..I thought the Fiat Assist was for 2 years too, however i have been informed in writing that it is for the 3 years!! So i dont need to look for EU cover etc this year either!

It depends who the converter is whether or not you get 2 or 3 years Fiat Assist. We had this with come up with both our IHs, we were told by IH it was 2 but Fiat said 3 but by our 2nd one when we checked with Fiat it had gone down to 2! She did give Nick an explanation at the time which made no particular sense but I’ve forgotten.

We’ve bought the 5 year package for our Consort though.
