Ferry Cuxhaven to Brunsbuttel across the Elbe

Visiting the outlaws in Denmark at the end of the month, traveling by Newcastle to Amsterdam, I am quite keen to avoid Hamburg and note that a ferry is operating on the above route but can't find any info - anyone used it or another ferry across the Elbe and to the West of Hamburg?

Remember seeing signs to a ferry when we stayed in Itzehoe
last month,just checked on the map and there is one that runs from Wischafen to Gluckstadt,much shorter crossing.As you say avoid Hamburg ,we had no probs southbound but northbound was another story!

Hi it's two years since I did a similar trip en route to Norway and seem to remember that ferry crossing was not operating then ..took the tunnel both going and coming back and can't remember any serious problems.
Didn't do much research and didn't realise it was a problem so obviously got lucky ..my trip was may / June time...
