One for you techies. When updating the maps on my Garmin Camper 795 using the Garmin app on my laptop it was painfully slow. Hours and hours overnight.

I am using a home Wi-Fi router connected to good ole copper wires via the phone line.

I have another couple of satnavs to update for my motorbikes, again Garmin.

Would it be faster to connect the pc directly to the router with a cable rather than use the Wi-Fi setup?

Thanks

Connecting via cable is usually more reliable but speed will depend on your Internet connection. If you have an ultra fast service then cabling will help for sure, but the bottleneck might be the USB interface or the actual device itself.
If your out in the sticks, or on an archaic connection, cabling up will be unlikely to make a difference.

Archaic connection about describes our setup. A company have just installed telegraph poles in the area to install fibre so may have to investigate that.
Thanks

I suspect it's more to do with Garmins servers than anything at your end (or in between). Any other file of that size takes very little time.

It usually has to download about 10Gb of data to update which will take a while on any connection

I have the same, Data transfer is abysmal

Full map update for our 760 / 780's takes les than 30 mins but we've got 300mb fibre.

My 780 takes about a minute including installing, so I don't think its the Garmin servers. I have got a 800mb download though

It's not always the Internet speed that controls the download speed. On an old laptop the download for 5GB and installation took around 4 hours. I upgraded to a one with an i5 processor and it reduced the time to 2hours.
