My van broke down just before Christmas, AA thought it was throttle value. Garage has just rung to say that is fine but engine has no compression.
Does anyone know what might be the cause of this.

Just to be clear.

Your van broke down in what way?
What were the symptoms?

To go from driving fine to no compression it rare, and when it does happen normally gives you some idea/noise/smoke etc.

A failed throttle valve on an 08, is a known thing. But doesn’t normally cause a breakdown situation, just warning lights/poor driving.

When it started it run a bit rough for about a minute, but it was freezing. It then ran fine. Drove out of the storage, stopping to open and close the gate. Then drove a mile and stopped at traffic lights. Pull away from them fine. Stopped at roundabout, pulled away fine from there. Drove 2 miles to next roundabout. Pulling away it lost power for a few seconds, it then came back to normal. 2 miles later at the next roundabout slowed to a stop as lights were red. Engine just died. AA man did get it to briefly fire up briefly on easy start. His diagnostic found everything to be fine and thought it might be throttle value had stripped its cogs. Then recovered to garage.

Sounds like it’s ‘just’ a fuelling/air issue then, or fuel/air metering issue. That’s good news as it ancillary parts like throttle body, MAF sensor etc related type things to look at…

Have the garage looked at it?

Sounds like you need to take it to a more honest and better garage to me.

Yes they are the ones saying it has no compression. Going back to my old British motorbike days my gut instinct was fuel starvation

If a failed throttle body as the AA man suggested, then it could be a restriction of air into the inlet manifold. Easy to bypass and test.

How have they tested for no compression?
Removed injectors, removed glow plugs?
Or
Just a relative electrical test?

Before jumping in, I’d want a PROPER compression test. Also it would run on ether if NO compression.

Is it chain or belt? If belt ice can form on inside of belt and cause the belt to jump? Get them to check timing positions

It does sound like the throttle valve is sticking. If the compression test was done with the valve closed then very little compression would be measured. The random running prior to actual failure is the symptom. Easy Start doesn't require anything like the amount of air that diesel needs to ignite so it probably would still show signs of running with a closed throttle valve

I might be talking nonsense 😅(as I don't know much about engines) but as it's just out of storage have you checked the air filter for vermin or a nest!
I had leaves in my air pipe (2009 3l fiat)and as I accelerated they where drawn up and blocked the mas airflow sensor causing limp mode,if it's an air issue it's worth a look.
Hope you have an easy fix.
Cheers Cris 🍻

Update. Been to the garage today. Currently they are basing their diagnostics on cranking speed being high. Once they can get it into the workshop they will run a full manual compression test.
They have observed the throttle value working, fuel does have a bit of water in it.
