Hello Everyone,
I'm looking into the options for trying to expand "off-grid" (or off main sites, anyway) capabilities, and I think the most limiting factor is the waste capacity (currently ~3 days depending on input).

Given the Thetford Cassette itself can't be swapped for a larger one, has anyone gone the route of taking a 2nd, a swapping them over when the tide rises?

If so, what type of container has been used to securely store the full one, to avoid any environmental disasters?

Thanks for any suggestions/tips...

Cheers,

Rich.

Yes I use a spare if needed( not used it in anger yet) 🤪 you can get a refresh kit. A new cassette and a toilet seat. Using the new or old as a spare. 🌟👍

A stall here at the Peterborough show is selling plastic containers for such an occasion. £39!
It just a plastic box so sure you could find something half that price in a DIY store. I have heard of some IKEA bags being used.
In theory the cassette should not leak.

We have a plastic storage container the wife bought from somewhere like home bargains. Fits in nice and snug with a lid.

We bought an extra cassette but haven used it yet. Just knowing it's there is a big bonus to be honest. Just one less thing to have to think about.

I will be looking for a suitable storage container from home bargains/bnm etc in the next week or two.

Thanks all,
I have a local B&M, so will have a looksee at what they might have that's suitable...whatever it is, it'll have to get official approval from SWMBO... 😉

Used to have two spare cassettes, but TBH, never used either. I only carry one now days! 👍🏻

Always carried a spare cassette lives in a lidded plastic soreage container in the garage.

If you need to use change over when it's not quite full. If you let it get completely full when it's not located in the loo compartment the motion when driving it will leak out the flap. Don't ask how I know.

To extend use time, flush with a spray bottle you can also use a bag for paper.

Carry a spare cassette, but don’t worry about spillages as just pop the full one in the garage.

and only used for no1, as most travellers will tell you, no2s never in the van toilet….

Living off grid will give you ample opportunity to operate alfresco. Also avoid flushing with water only use diluted spray disinfectant.

We have carried a spare cassette for many years and I think only had to resort to using it once so probably not really worth while.

The spare is stored in a wheeled trolly type suitcase so should the need arise we can nonchantly wheel a full one into a posh hotel without raising suspicion and empty in their loo.:whistle2:

I've always carried a spare for many years, not really needed in mainland Europe as there is usually somewhere nearby to empty but for us its handy when touring Greece, not many service points there.
When we had the Hymer it used to store nicely in the double floor locker, now we have a PVC it sits underneath the dinette with exterior access, I had a storage bag made by Bags4everthing for £25 inc p&p.

One way of having a nice smelly toilet, need some brown stuff in there to get the bacteria going.
As this thread is about extending time off grid do you just crap in the woods? :giggle:

We have a wheeled shopping bag the cassette fits in, had to do a stealth dump in a Morrison's last November. :(

We have a container slightly larger capacity than the cassette, it was used to hold flares etc when at sea so is very water (smell) tight.

I have a spare, but not had to use it yet. Will probably just stick it in a heavy duty bin liner, but it shouldn't leak.

We do use ours. Full one sits horizontal in MH garage in heavy bin liner.

But why should it leak in there any more than in use?

We are thinking of getting a second spare, but that might make the folding shovel completely redundant, after 2 uses in 10 years. ::bigsmile:

So is a properly maintained and serviced toilet cassette.. watertight and smell tight...
If it isn't it needs a bit of TLC and new seals fitted..👍👍

As long as they are waterproof and you carry it carefully to the elsan ;) ....

In theory the cassette should not leak.

actually, I keep the spare cassette in a zip-up IKEA bag :)
