We have at both ends since then French end no go area don’t know about Folkestone but we were very early for book in and overnighted in the waiting area by the restaurant and take away area etc bit noisy though

No one stopped us or even checked, I have to admit it’s not somewhere I would recommend but ok if you are in a fix. We were very early as our train was around 06.00 and we got there around 22.00 the night previous they checked us through and we drove straight down to the waiting area.
the reason we did that was that we had been given a ticket for parking at the Leaze Folkestone it had only just been designated no parking unbeknown to us and I Honestly did not see the signs as it was dark when we got there and the warden ticketed the van whilst we were sat in there didn’t even knock the door to tell me.

Have a look at Canterbury Park and Ride. Not that far from the tunnel and reasonable price

There's a good pubstop just up the road from Folkestone end. The closest we stop otherside is Berck or Gravelines, depending where we are travelling from. Used to like Wissant but apparently boat central these days.

We've not stayed but I thought there was what looked like a secure stopover area the French end, has that closed ?

For overnighting yes and not advisable in daylight from what you read

We use Canterbury P+R which is slightly easier for Dover ferries but also good for Chunnel. Advantage is that you can have all services empty/full before hitting the crossing.
