We you fill your Insurance proposal form & say you estimate 3,000 miles for European & 5,000 UK mileage. How would the Insurance Company know what mileage was done in which Country? Tia

I have never split my mileage up like that, just tell them 6000 mile in total.

My insurers ask for a split.
You can’t possibly give them an accurate answer, that’s unreasonable, my insurers (comfort) never ask anything like that🤷‍♂️👍

I was with Safeguatd a couple of years ago but don't remember them asking for European milage, must be fairly new thing with them. Haw can you even guess, many people pop across to France several times on a whim. Does it add much to the policy costs if you double the estimate. They can check annual total miles from your MOT history once your vehicle is over 3years old.

AND THEY DO!!!
On renewals, moho and car I’ve been asked if I want to raise the miles as I’ve gone over the miles on the policy🤷‍♂️🤬

When you have a claim, that’s one of the first things they check. It is supposed to be only an estimate - but if you’re very wrong - dey gonna run away

And they often ask what the current mileage is at the point of renewal.
And if you stay with the same broker / insurer they'll know what miles you insured for last year, and the year before... cheating will be obvious.
Also, many insurance brands end up being the same underwriter; and they might even share that info across the industry.
This is one saving I don't think it's worth making...

I asked our insurers (Comfort) what period is covered. They said it was the period the cover starts and finish.

That is not the period of the MOT.
Yebbut both are a 12-month so a guide for them to enquire if you’ve under-stated. If you’ve evidence to support your statement then you’re ok. Their job is to wriggle out…

In theory - if you discover that, in fact, you’re going over the estimates you gave - you could give them a call and adjust. In theory…

It’s a reasonable question as recovery from the EU would be much more expensive that from the UK and if 90% was abroad greater the risk. Not saying I condone it but understandable.

I'd be able to give a fairly accurate figure for UK and abroad use due to keeping fuel/mileage records for previous trips, in our current insurance 'period' which has a limit of 6,000 miles we've done approximately 5,860 miles which, as it's up for renewal towards the end of April, means we've got 140 miles 'left' which will be sufficient for our needs as we've got no plans for any holidays for a while. I might look to increase the allowance for the new insurance period though as, had we gone a bit further south in Spain as we had originally intended to, we'd have been cutting it fine, or gone over a bit. I don't think a small discrepancy would be an issue however if we go over by 1,000 miles I'm sure it would be another matter entirely if we had to make a major claim.

We did have to have a windscreen repair recently as a ruddy great stone was thrown up on our way home in the UK, fortunately it was towards the bottom centre of the screen and although it hit it really hard and 'smashed' through the shatterproof layer it was still able to be filled, they also did a smaller one too which we'd had for a while. Fortunately our policy (Comfort) doesn't make a charge for repairs.

I have done that and the mileage estimate was increased with no extra charge and a "thanks for being so honest".

Had to increase as my Dad was at end of life and I was doing an amazing extra 600 to 800 miles a month.
