I bought a new motorhome in Germany and drove it back to my home last week. The guidance on HMRC is to use an import agent to submit the CDS & NOVA. I contacted MyCarImport as they are recommended on here. I submitted the various documents, they then instantly asked for the VAT to be paid to them directly. However, there is no official HMRC invoice and only their word for reassurance they will pay it on. This then takes up to 10 days to process and you have no assurance on where the money is. Has anyone else experienced this?

Not used them, but based on what you say i would be very sceptical paying the vat to them and not HMRC
You are forced to use an Import Agency. There is no choice for the CDS and Nova - you can no longer deal direct with HMRC for payment of the VAT. I know people have used them successfully but where’s the protection. It seems you’re left holding your breath. You can’t use a credit card - so no protection that way either.

The import agent has to create CDS and NOVA entries to HMRC and they should provide details from these to the importer to support their billing.

Check for online reviews of your import company! Does HMRC have a list of approved importers that they deal with regularly and is yours on the list?
