We have a 2018 Ducato 150bhp manual that has covered 33,000 miles. Today as we were just getting onto the motorway in Oxford the EML came on and the vehicle went in limp mode, we managed to pull over into a safe parking spot quickly and turned the engine off. We tried the old turning it on and off trick a few times but the light stayed on.
We called our breakdown company and they sent out a local recovery man. He plugged in his obd. The vehicle showed a couple of faults, so he then spent an hour checking this and that but couldn’t find anything.
On the advice of recovery man he reset the codes and he agreed to follow us to the service station about 20 miles away. We have now covered about 30 miles with no issues and have settled on a small site near Newbury.
Tomorrow I am going to buy an Obd reader and we will get in touch with the local Fiat Professional Dealer.
I have attached a photo of the Obd readout and was just enquiring if anyone had a similar experience and what was the fix.
Thanks for any help!

Is there a fault with the ABS as well?
I don’t think there’s a problem with the ABS. The Eml came on and no other light before we stopped. After the codes were reset it drove with no issues or Eml lights.

It seems to be a quirk with ducatos that they just throw up faults noe and again. Buy yourself a cheap obd2 reader and clear the codes yourself. You cant do any harm. If there is a real fault it will soon show up again. At least by clearing the faults, you can get out of limp mode and get to your destination..

Is your van a non adblue euro 6 engine? Suspect it is.
The P250-38A ECU error is one of the errors reported in the service bulletin I posted on Friday here https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/euro6b-ecu-software-v32-update.283694/#post-5615197
That requires v32 ecu update to address
It’s is a non ad blue van.

Thanks for this information, we are supposed to be heading to France later this week, I will try and speak to a Fiat Professional dealer in the morning.
Do you think this upgrade could fix our issue? We have had the van for 5 years with no mechanical issues at all.

If you are still near Newbury there is HTC Fiat Professional at Theale.....about 10 miles along A4 towards Reading. I've always found them helpful ...if a bit expensive!!

Read these first. No it wont solve it on its own.
I suggest you get multiecuscan asap and look to run the daignostics suggested in the threads bellow.
Has your van been serviced by fiat pro in its life?

It had its first service in early 2020 at a Fiat professional dealer but due to there appalling service I have had all maintenance done at a local commercial dealer.

I am booked into the Fiat professional dealer at Portsmouth in the morning.
I will send an update when I have some info.

We took the vehicle into Adam Morey today and they had a look at it straight away. They informed us that the software was upto date. They ran the diagnostics which came back with a problem with the oil level sensor which was causing the p250a fault code, there is also another fault code which is a steering angle sensor. Neither of these fault codes should send the vehicle into limp mode.
So to sum up I am not sure if we are any clearer on what the problem was, maybe if it happens again I should just get the van recovered to a Fiat professional dealer before clearing the faults, the only issue with that is finding a dealer that doesn’t have a month long waiting list.
In the meantime we have just covered over 100 miles since the problem, we have decided to go to France on Saturday and continue with our planned holiday. I just need to do some research on how to use my new Obd reader just in case.
Thanks for your help.

Did your dealer confirm you were on v32? Or just say you were “up to date”? What ever you were told, I’d still get a VGate OBD tool and either the Multiecuscan (for window / iOS) or alfaobd for android and scan it / have in case of a future problem

They told me our software was upto date?

When I get back that is what I intend to do, when I get back in a month or so I will update you.
I’m currently halfway through a thread on the Fiat forum and it’s certainly opening my eyes to some of the problems this non adblue Euro 6 engine is causing with some customers. I intend to use premium diesel moving forward and hopefully I can get through my trip in Brittany.
Thanks for your help.

Still having issues, back to the Fiat Professional garage today, the van performed like it was was only giving 85% of its normal power but no warning lights on. The garage checked the injectors and although not perfect they were all deemed to be fine. Until the light comes back it’s still difficult to pinpoint. We were warned that it could be the ECU that’s faulty.
I will keep the forum updated.

absolutely random question here. Based on basic mechanics, has the air filter and pipework been checked for partial blockages?

I had the vehicle serviced a couple of months ago but I must admit I’ve not checked the filter. I will have a look tomorrow and report back if I find anything sinister.

could be as simple as an oily rag or a birds nest in the air intake. Have seen it personally on a vehicle bought at auction that had reduced power. Thought I was in for an engine swap but cleaning out the airpipes sorted it after a very long drive home

Good luck today 🤞 let us know the outcome 👍
Just to let you know the light came on again just as we were passing Portsmouth on Monday evening.
On Tuesday morning Adam Morey diagnosed a faulty Ecu unit. This was fitted on Wednesday and upto yet we’ve done about 60 miles and it feels right.
Let’s see if it’s still ok in 1000 miles?
Thanks for your help and advice.
