Engine failure on Citreon Relay

Hi all

New to the forum and am after any help or advice!
We've converted a Citreon Relay into a camper.
Took her for her first big trip and it broke down on the way home.
Oil pressure light came on briefly, and the the engine sounded like it was ticking a little. We slowed right down ( was on a motorway) and then the engine cut out.
We didn't want to start it again. So basically ended up getting taken back home by the AA.
The van took on around 5.5L of oil, and then started. But there were some whooshing noises whilst it revved.
Since then we have left it alone, to not do any further damage.
We restarted it again, and now there's no whooshing noise but quite a loud tick coming from what sounds like the upper part of the engine.
There has been an engine light on for around 9 months, but it had been plugged in for diagnostics and nothing came up. This could be a factor. It appeared to drive just fine though.
We thought it was using more oil on our trip than normal... But we were driving a lot. So stupidly didn't check to see what was normal for the vehicle. Definitely seems it was drinking it up!
Anyways, just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience?
We're thinking we may need to replace the engine.. And it's difficult to know whether to sink more money into the van. Or f**k it all off tbh!

Drain the oil and replace the filter. See if there's any magic glitter (bearing material) in there. Which is likely if it's been starved of oil. If you've chewed the bearings, the engine is not long for this world.

First, don’t panic.

It could be catastrophic and require a new engine, it could just be something that can be fixed for a few hundred pounds. Until you get it looked at by a professional, or someone who knows what they are doing, you won’t know.

If it ticks over and starts, which it does, then all is not lost and at least it’s a working engine

Loads of engines around as they are common vans as well as spares and expertise at fixing them.

Where are you based? People might have some suggestions as to where might be able to help.

Worst case, it will cost a few grand to replace the engine that you will then have no issues with for 100,000’s of miles all being well. The conversion makes most vans worth repairing, even if it is a bit steep.

From what you are saying, and how you are talking, you need to get the vehicle to a garage who know diesel engines, and are fair, and honest.

All that work! Don't give up at the first post. The engines running, you say? That's half way there. Find a good helpful garage, explain the position. MH always cost more than you expect, get it sorted and you'll get years of use out of it. Best of luck👍

I wonder if the PCV valve has failed and dumped the oil ?
Realistically, you're gonna have to get it to someone who knows this engine and get it checked over ?

Black smoke is normally excess fuel white smoke normally oil burning possibly turbo it will need a propper mechanic to have a look and listen what engine and year might help.
White smoke is more likely head gasket , blue smoke is oil burning. If its went through 5.5 litre of oil then it has serious issues with the turbo or the piston rings.

Excessive tapping from top of engine could be valves.


Basically it could be many things none of them cheap. If the op doesn't have the mechanical knowledge it's going to need a garage to diagnose. Impossible to do online

The have been a number of engines fitted over the years. What year are we talking about?

And you may find lots of oil in the turbo hoses, pointing to a turbo fail.
Top head oil starvation, and valves will start to tick. Even 2L missing the valves will tell you.

Turbo failure? and it may have consumed your Sump oil. Whoosh noises are often leaking hoses on the downstream side of the turbo. You don't say how old the Van is but if its pre 2016 with the Ford engine then the oil pumps fail suddenly. Decision it replace is just down to the age of the van and its value together with your ability if DIY or what you have to pay if its someone else sorting it. Good luck.

Having given my story of this motor in a previous thread.I have to say it’s a pretty crap engine.Having had a complete replacement at a tad short of £10,000 with new turbo clutch injection system and fly-wheel.After 6,000 miles it’s back in the garage due to an injector issue.More on this later🙄

Just make sure you don’t try and run the engine, even for a few seconds, if the oil level is below the minimum mark on the dipstick or you risk making things worse.
Sorry, that probably sounds obvious!

I had a Citroen Relay a few years back, the dreaded engine management light came on, I ignored it and 5 miles down the road I had the same symptons as you, I had it recovered to commercial garage that I use, it ended up being a hole in a piston! It was either a replacement engine or repair!
My advice is get it down to a good mechanic, it could be anything.

Well, I wonder what happened to him!
With the muppet on Those Happy Days having two Citroen Relay engine failures and Camper Vibe having one die in Spain, it wouldn't be my choice of base vehicle.

campervibes engine did not fail it was a misdiagnosed heat exchanger failure and the citroen dealer stripped engine right down
