Boxer Peugot 2001

newbie
AFter Dollie, spent a week in a service centre in Thetford last week, the engineer finding out that the gears were sticking and clunking due to old cabling. He then told me, after researching the product, he needed to replace the cabling, that Peugot has decided to STOP PRODUCING the said gear cabling ?

Question now is, WHAT THE HECK do I do with a motorhome, that I, as a mere 5ft lady, is finding that changing gears, is now causing knee pain, that |Ive never suffered before ?

I took Dollie, out for a weekend, but only drove here for 15 minutes to the site, to then I find out that the water pump decided, or the sensor, is stopping any water coming out of the taps. So no showers or running water for my first trip.

Pump can be replaced, and Im still under warranty, but WHAT DO I DO ABOUT THE CABLING FOR MY OLD GIRL PLEASE HELP ???

Feeling, very worried n despondent, that my 20k investment is now going down the pan, and i have only had one trip with her so far, and a complete newbie at this game too > Thank you so much guy for your help
Thank you so much Sweet Caroline+

The engineer will know of a place to get cables made to order - may have to take the existing ones in for them to copy. I suspect the engineer cant be bothered and wanted the space Dollie was taking up. I would have hoped he tried some lubrication first.

If the pump is under warranty surely there is mechanical warranay for the cables?

You say it’s hurting your knee, is that due to clutch being heavy compared to your normal vehicle?

I had a gear change problem in my 2006 Boxer. This was cured by my wonderful mechanic by stripping and lubricating the linkages.
Thank you for the above, yes they have tried lubrication, but it is still very hard for me to change gears, so even the engineer said, that the cabling has to be changed, to make it easy for me to drive sadly,

Chill, sweet caroline , first trips out are usually accompanied by having to fix or become familiar with stuff.
The water pump won't be a big deal to sort out.
As Clivefog said, there are specialist firms that will make cables to your pattern, often re-using the end fittings from the old cables if new aren't available. I've had bespoke cables for my 70 and 90 yr old vintage vehicles made that way. There are Teflon-lined cables which need less force to operate the equipment. Not only do these not need lubricating but they must NOT be lubricated or they will swell and make operation difficult.
For 40 years I've used Venhill Cables who are reasonably near to me. They make cables for m/bikes, cars and bespoke industrial use so I'm pretty sure they could reproduce yours even if they re-used your fittings.

Look at the 'Bespoke' section on their website:

Also their 'Car Gearchange Cable' section here:

Dont panic
Take it back to the dealer and reconsider your options there are many 5' women out there who have no issues changing gears maybe an automatic vehicle would suit you better.
Why was the van not serviced by the dealer you purchased it from?
Why was this issues not recognised when you test drove it
It's an old van even new second hand vans it is said expect to pay 20% of the purchase price on repairs.
Have you by taking the van elsewhere voided the warranty read the small print .did you purchase it or was it in writing from the dealer
Try calling around parts suppliers although pergoet may not sell original parts they will be available somewhere. Even 'a mere 5ft lady' can use a phone
Did you put some or all of the payment on a CC as that offers you far more protection than many warranties.
Sadly vans are not investments but money pits keep your chin up adopt the attitude of ok something is wrong put your big girl pants on and deal with it. Once you start having adventures the pain will subside.
Nearly 5 years in with my old girl there's always something but she worth it

Bought Van off well known dealership in Somerset, but sadly living in Suffolk, i DID NOT TEST DRIVE IT., Yes it is all under warranty and the dealership have accepted all the faults and will pay the costs, without me having to take Dollie back to Somerset.
I have taken heed on the advise and will mull it over tonight, and go back to Peugeot dealership who are trying their best to help me with the cabling,
I will keep in touch guys, but thank you for ALL BEING THERE.

Just a quickie, does this Boxer Peogeot 2001 motorhome, have hydrualic gear box, as the Coastal Garage on the net, seems to have the cabling, but it states that it is only for a Hydraulic gear box?

I dont want her to go back, as someone suggested, a its an 8hour journey from Suffolk for me witha difficult gear box, but mroe importantly I absolutely LOVE HER, and my new found Funsters friends on here guys. Huge Thank you

I think that coastalmotorhomes are needing to know if the clutch is hydraulic operation or cable operated on your model / year of van . ( If you do not know ,they should be able to help if you can phone and give them the chassis/vin number from your V5/log book )

It's a motorhome made to travel in, make a trip out of it pack it up and take it down there , plan to stay a few nights and even if you can't stay in the van get a BnB
make sure you have everything in writing keep track of all dates and communication
Have a look at the Manuel it will give you all the information on your vans engine. If the engine has not been charged all parts suppliers need is the registration number
Remember you have the upper hand women read the instruction manuals
So they tell me.
I have to ask as many funsters must be wondering why did you not test drive it? Did the dealer refuse you

Hi there Jock, no pump noise at all, it did make a noise, for around 5 minutes, and yes i did have running water for not more than 1 minute, and then it stopped. JAWS good old boy, now has given me the number of a habitation guy here in Norfolk, and my engineer of a son in law, says it is the SENSOR. so i think maybe the sensor, more than the pump has gone thank you for taking an interest honey.
I feel soooooooooooooooo happy that a gear cabling product has eventually been found, has made me very happy indeed, and when the sensor is done

I AM ON MY WAY!!!!!!

Thank you for the above, i didnt test drive it, due to my son badgering me to get on the road, as we had an 8 hour journey back to Suffolk, and we had to detour to bristol to pick up his girlfriend to boot! mmmm Yeah ! I know !!!

Just seen this post and maybe a Peugeot dealership is not the best place to take an older van, best find a recommended local garage, they would be possible better at sorting problems on older vehicles and not tied to factory parts.
