Hi !

Lovely fellow motor hime
Owners !

Got the shock of my motor home
Life last Saturday evening when the high winds sadly tore my skylite window off !!! Been struggling to keep waterproof since as not yet able to get a motor home specialist to measure up for a replacement as yet !

Would you recommend superglue on a tarp ? Gaffer tape has sadly failed !
It IS cleaned around the opening now ready for some superglue in desperation as I understand it may take ages to acquire a complete replacement fitting , then the van specialists are all so busy ! I’m a woman in her Tod !!!

Thanks for any advice in anticipation !!!
Xx

Melinda

as chaser said..

to give an idea of cost, it looks like (need to be confirmed) a standard 400 x 400 mm MPK roof light .. about £65 + Labour to replace

It's an easy job for a competent DIYer if you know any ,,

Look for one of those low flat plastic under- bed storage boxes that will fit over the opening, with a few bricks on top (assuming its not going to be driven until fixed) Good Luck

When I had a similar problem when my front overcab skylight blew off, I used damp proof membrane quality plastic, doubled up and duct tape and drove over 200 miles with it in some rainy conditions and managed to stay dry

But concur with the comment above, the roof needs to be clean for the tape to stick

The first thing you need to do is to get onto the roof with a scrubbing brush and caravan cleaner and clean the area that you intend to stick the tarpaulin down to, rather then using a fabric tape like duct tape or gorilla tape try using a foil tape like 3M 425 it doesn’t degrade as fast with UV or weather and will stay on at speed, it's similar to the speed tape used on temporary aircraft repairs.

When we used to loose them on static caravans in transit we used upside down washing up bowl with wood across small hole in middle with string loop through wood underneath longer than the hole and twist till tight it would travel miles and no need to go on roof

I assume the skylight has gone AWOL or the top is in multiple pieces? If you've still got it, just screw drop it over and screw through the frame.

If not, you just need something to cover the hole. You don't need to a water tight seal. Something like a solid plastic kiddy paddling pool. Water that runs under it will be held back by the lip on the old frame. You just need to keep it flying off in the wind. Bricks? Tie it down? Or anchor it from the inside?

The same thing happened to us and we used clear gaffa tape over and over and it worked perfectly i think it was clear gorilla tape ,we were going on holiday and it lasted until we came home and got it replaced 👍

Absolute beginners.
Roof access and a clean surface will be the key [ no pun intended] to achieving a decent repair, are you able to sort both of those issues first? The Gorilla tape sounds a decent short term repair, perhaps over a base coat of plastic sheeting.
Mike.
