having recently bought my first MH I am busy emptying my bank account by buying things I THINK I might need! I have bought a small microwave to use when on EHU and am contemplating a single electric hotplate. I have gas rings/grill fitted and wonder if I am just being too miserly trying to save gas when I have paid for electric hook up. Does cooking use much gas? I only have a limited amount of space and payload and only one gas bottle ( The MH is a NuVenture Surf). Opinions on this would be appreciated. I will only be cooking for myself - although the dog will want her share! I have no current plans on spending more than 2 weeks away at a time, all within the UK.

Cooking on gas does not use a lot of gas, when you say 'hot plate' do you mean a stand alone unit that you can pack away in a cupboard when not in use, or one cut into the work surface. If the later think carefully, work top space in a van is sparse to say the least. Personally I'd run with gas and see how you go. Oh, don't rush out buying things you 'think' you might need, most of us lot around here have got a shed full of those things.

It depends on how often you expect to be on EHU. Balancing taking extra stuff against saving gas when electric paid for. Gas bottle exchange is pricey and not only that, can be inconvenient if none available where you are and then there is the bother of changing it or running out when half way through cooking your dinner.
When in our smaller van, with small bottles, we used to take a mini George Foreman grill to use on hookup. Saves gas and can be used outside so removes some cooking smells from van.

I mean the small pack away type.

We dont like cooking in the van, so to supplement the BBQ we have an induction hob for use outside, does the job (y)

To add to my post, we started down the route of “saving gas” when touring for 6 weeks in Europe with just 2 small 3.6 kg calor bottles and not being able to exchange an empty one.
It does concentrate the mind !

Get a small single plate portable induction hob and you can use it outside as well(y)

You would be better spending your money on a refillable gas bottle then you can top up the gas anywhere that sells LPG, also cuts the cost of gas by 2/3rds.
IMO microwaves & electric hobs are a waste of time in a Motorhome, take up space and there is nothing you can cook in them you can't cook with gas. Gas is far cheaper than paying for EHU

I would recommend one of these, very compact and very efficient and when on EHU you are using power you havealreasdy paid for so why use you own gas.

Our van has diesel heating so gas is only for cooking. We have a refillable system (installed before we bought it), a bit of a waste because it took us over 6 months to need to refill. Cooking doesn't use much gas!
