Just purchased another motorhome which has an Efoy hydrogen fuel cell fitted.
I’m looking for a local supplier of the methanol fluid bottles that feed this unit, as deliveries cost a fortune and I would like to buy off the shelf, if possible. I am located in Hertfordshire SG9 area.
Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks.

I pick my Efoy fuel up from Fuel Cell Systems at Hungerford. If you are heading along the M4 it is not a big diversion to drop down to Hungerford, which is what I do once a year. They are very helpful, give them a call they might have a suggestion about where else you could pick some up. All the UK Efoy supplies come through them so they really don’t mind trying to help solve problems. 01488 507050.

Just in case you are unaware having had Efoy in a number iPod vehicles they do not use vast amounts as it’s supporting your system not running it,a 5Litre cartridge can last ages.

best to try and get a few of us an order and see if we can transport. Efoy fuel isn't actually expensive, the delivery is more than the fuel. I was thinking of buying maybe 10 5Ls as the delivery is the same and then selling on with delivery at rallies etc or collection 5 mins from J17 of the M6.

we really need to sort this, Effoys are amazing but a pain in the backside for fuel

The delivery charge from hungerford is a joke. I used to order from Germany and they used the same uk carrier, you just told them that it was a business address and made up a company name.
Since b….t it’s too expensive

With sites charging more for EHUs (understandably) I often find the Efoy fuel cost cheaper than EHU.

Many thanks for the advice given. As I am travelling along the M4 next Friday, I will call in to Hungerford and pick up supplies from the main agents.

Give them a call and they will probably have your fuel ready and waiting for you.

Edit. Also a good opportunity to discuss using your Efoy if you are new to it. I also like to keep a small bottle of the service fluid with me because it will shut down if it needs topping up.

Interesting, I have a service fluid, but never used it, will have to look at how.

I am going to Croatia in October, I think I am going to bring back 6 x 5L ones. They used to deliver to the uk for about 9.95, but now they don't because of import tax. :-( unless you are a business.

You only use the service fluid when the unit says it needs it, I never got to use it on ours.

It tells you if it needs service fluid. Do not fill it otherwise.

4.2 Adding service fluid. If the service fluid level is low, the message: "Please refill service fluid" is displayed on the operating panel.

You then add one complete bottle.

Last year, I was thinking about fitting a Efoy so did some research and found canal chandelier seem to be the best bet.
IF I remember correctly, I recollect that there was at least, one supplier in Hertfordshire?
Good Luck!

Just be careful Paul, we used to sell methanol and SFC’s

Your insurers have to be notified one’s fitted, but more importantly when we checked about carrying Methanol the insurance companies were clueless and when ‘they’ checked they all said maximum of five litres could be carried, the same as petrol.

I seem to remember seeing 40 gallon drums of methanol at an HGV garage who's equipment I used to look after. I'm sure they said they added it into the air brake system to stop it icing up in winter ? That was in the 90's, but H&S has progressed a long way since then and they're probably only allowed to store an eye dropper full on site nowadays ?

Is/was one of the ingredients of antifreeze and used to improve wine, if I remember, correctly, the wine scandal some time ago? 😆

In 2018 I got clearance from NFU before fitting my Efoy. I provided all the technical information I could and specifically mentioned carrying 2 x 10l containers of methanol. They kicked it around the underwriters technical department for 3 months before I received the following confirmation.
“I have just checked my referral and am happy to say that we finally have an answer, having researched the power units our Underwriters are satisfied that they are safe and would treat the risk on a standard basis without the application of any additional terms.”

you can actually buy ethanol off ebay that can be used. However, you then have to cut off the lid off your standard ethanol Efoy and put it in. I know someone who has done this since the conception of efoy cells on his boat. When I tried it, it proved to difficult.

You are right the Efoy fuel container is difficult to open, it is very tough. I did manage to get into one but I think the safety of the container was lost. Having persuaded NFU that the Efoy fuel system is safe I think I best stick with their fuel and containers. Also I asked Fuel Cell Systems why the Efoy fuel has a use before date, I didn’t think ethanol would go off. They said the ethanol doesn’t go off but the plastic container can deteriorate under the influence of the ethanol, which then becomes polluted which in turn can damage the fuel cell. As ethanol is an organic liquid it probably needs a glass container for long term storage and that wouldn’t meet the safety requirements for use in vehicles and boats. Re-using old containers doesn’t seem like a good option.
