Motor Homing 5 years, caravan previously
Took the van up there 5 years ago, found out the same, high parking fees for the day with no overnight stays allowed. Did a circle arround the car park, thought sod that for parking fees, drove down the road along the narrow bit, met a coach coming the other way. 6 cars behind me, and a couple behind the coach involved a lot of marshalling to let the coach driver reverse back a 100 yards or so which he did without any hassle, along with a smile. (y)
Of course I thanked him, and said to the misses, never let me bring the MH to Dorset again, they don't want us here unless its on a highly priced campsite, which we steer clear of in most other places.

TBH, don't blame them.

At least it might stop the place being ruined by the same selfish ******* who have completely ruined what used to be a gorgeous parking place in a quiet corner of Scotland:

This is why the high tourist car park charges.

Many treat these places as right to visit rather than a privilege once quite area’s which now attract masses, who to be honest many don’t wander more than 100 yards from their vehicle.

Homes purchased in Skye and the western isle turning them in to Airbnb does nothing for the locals, it just drives local out due to cost and makes areas gentrified ghost villages and towns. It’s no different in other parts of the country where once we could enjoy a quiet getaway. Bude beach now has ‘eco houses’ planted on the edge of the beach…first a few now more have been built. how did that happen!

Just looked it's £20 for a car all day at that rate £30 for a motorhome doesn't sound unreasonable most are going to take at least two spaces
Privately owned and they can do what they like. People always have a choice and many appear to be totally ok with the car parking charges. Good point about motorhome parking as well.

People want to park up with a nice view in the middle of things free and stay all day sadly it's far from a realistic expectation

As prices rise the locals cannot afford the properties and no not after a fast buck. Wages are low and life is hard an incommmer can easily afford to out bid a local. Go and live on Harris and see what life is really like.

Often the young folk go to the main land to work and some eventually return there is no easy life to be had and values in the island are more than just a quick buck.

Love it when things are simplified,
It is simple really, there are not many people who would reject a higher offer on their property unless they wished to pass it on to family, or very close friends perhaps, that's human nature and perhaps buying a property as well as being a home for someone may also be funding their pension, so as we live in a free market economy it is what it is. I do have sympathy for those that want to live in the area they grew up in but it is up to them to earn sufficiently well to be able compete with people from other places, the alternative is a communist system where all property is owned by the state and handed out on a needs basis, is that a solution that the majority of British people would prefer? Personally I don’t think so.

I have a Cornish bred nephew and two nieces who having been to university and experienced the far greater opportunities, salaries and vibrant lifestyle up country had no wish to return to a future living in Cornwall.
That's not a scientific assessment but it was a common theme among their contemporaries.
When I worked at A&P shipyard in Falmouth we had a Royal Navy RFA ship in for 6 weeks. I mentioned to an officer that there must be stiff competition for the 30 or so caretaker crew places for those who remained on board in the Cornish Riviera he replied: "You must be joking. They'd far rather have gone to your Newcastle yard where the women, the clubs and the booze are much better".

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
Both in private ownership. Their land, they decide the charges. Wouldn't really fancy taking a motorhome down to either. Parking a car in central Cambridge now cost over £33 for 5 hours.
But at least they have several very good park and rides as an alternative.
