I know this has been gone over so many times through the years (apparently) but as we are reasonably new members, I wanted to ask a question regarding the dreaded scuttle issue as I can't seem to find the answer on previous threads discussing the issue. We have a 22 plate Ducato based Burstner. The scuttle sits away from the centre of the screen by a good few mm's along a 6 inch section (sorry to mix measurements!). The ends don't seam to sit flush to the vehicle either. I'm sure I saw in a previous thread that Fiat have never addressed the issue but Peugeot did (am I right in thinking the Boxer is in effect the same vehicle?). Some questions in relation to this:

1) Should the ends of the scuttle sit flush to the glass or are they designed to sit away?
2) If Peugeot did fix the issue (I'm referring to water ingress into the engine compartment, not poor draining from the drain holes), could I just purchase a a Boxer scuttle and replace my Fiat one?

As an aside, the vehicle was in at my local Fiat dealer this week for a recall (apparently there are issues with AdBlue leaks). I specifically asked about the scuttle leaking water into the engine bay. You won't be surprised to hear that it's 'not a warranty issue'. I had two technicians speak to me about it. One said it was designed that way....which I guess is technically true. The other said that the material deforms over time due to the heat from the engine. He appeared bemused when I pointed out the vehicle only has 2,200 miles on it!
I'm really not in the mood to get into a back and forth with the dealer on this so it looks like I will have to pay to have it professionally sealed with some mastic type material. I've been quoted £150 as a call out rate by a local company specialising in applying sealant (buildings, not vehicles....but what could go wrong!). I briefly considered applying my own but every time I walk into our shower at home I'm reminded of my last sealant job. Let's just say that the countless hours watching YouTube videos on how to apply sealant perfectly were a waste of good pub time!

If you dont have the confidence to do this yourself get a motorhome dealer or mobile workshop to do it. it's really a simple job though and I'm sure you cold do it if you mask off other side of the joint before applying any sealant.

Off thread a little but, we bought our motorhome just before Christmas to give ourselves a little "us" time and a bit of a "getaway" from the mundane and stressful times we are in. BIG SHOCK ! I've now replaced it with ECU'S, vehicle battery worries, constantly looking on the camera when it pings in case someone is trying to steal it, what extra security I can get, will my pipes freeze, will I be overloaded if I put an awning in the rear garage, not to mention the anxiety panel telling me the vehicle battery is dead even though I purchased a BM. WHAT HAVE WE DONE?? It was the scuttle thread that got me going,we have a fiat based MH :)

andyelbac. When asking our funsters for help/advice, it sometime helps if you are able to attached a photo or two. Not a criticism just advice for future posts.

A cheaper way would be to throw a brick at your windscreen and when they come out to replace it ask them to seal the scuttle to the windscreen.
It may depend what your excess is on your insurance though.😊
To be honest it’s not a difficult job to do yourself which I have done a few times now.

I just use black insulation tape to go over any gap.
+1 for this; I applied good quality black insulting tape along the whole length of the scuttle, intending to replace it periodically if it lifted. We had the van 4 years and I never replaced it......

Hasten to add I cleaned & dried the screen & scuttle thoroughly before applying the tape.

You really haven't seen my shower, have you? 😁

An alternative is to get yourself on a Fun Rally.

When you get there, give it 48hrs and then lift the bonnet and stand in front of it occasionally scratching your head.

I guarantee then someone will join you and, if they don't have the experience of doing the job, there's more a good chance that they will know someone on the rally that will.

My 18 month old van seems to be leaking water on to the engine between the bottom of the screen and the rubber seal. Planning to run a bead of silicon or something similar to seal them together.

I'm really enjoying the Burstner. I really like driving the vehicle and the 9 speed auto is great, so happy with the Fiat aspect. It's just a pity that 2 niggling things detract; the leaking scuttle and the inability to enter vehicle dimensions in the sat nav.

If you go onto the fiat forum it seems to be common problem, recommended fix is insulation tape.

Decided to let CamperUK take a look as it still has warranty. Booked in for next Monday.
