Since 2018. After 40 years with a caravan
This has probably been asked before, but. I reach the grand age of 70 this year and need to renew my licence. This is an old school paper version last issued in 77. It shows categories A & E only. I know these changed later but trying to decipher DVLA info is getting to be a nightmare. So, currently we have a 3500kg van so I think this will continue to be ok? What if we decide on a heavier van, what then? C, C1, D4 medical? When renewing the licence do you need to specify categories or is there no choice? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You are fine up to 3.5 tonnes.

Any bigger and you would have a medical every three years.

I didn't bother with C1 I have not driven anything like that for over 20 years, but if you think you may need it and have no health issues then get the form and have the medical. I think you cannot apply online with a paper license anyway.

Thank you all for this. Nothing easy about getting older. I also volunteer drive for a local community minibus service, I suppose this needs looking into as well. Ho hum….
