Driving in Belgium

My other half only has a paper driving licence and I'm finding conflicting advice online about driving in Belgium with this - some sites say you might need an International Driving Permit if you don't have a photo card licence. Has anyone got any experience of this please? I have a photocard licence and am happy driving the motorhome but don't fancy being the sole driver for the week we're there!

It used to be Ok with a paper license if it was the pink EU but not with the green one. Since Bx you need a photo one or IDP.

I have a paper one and driven through Belgium.
It was what DVLA issued me with so if it's not good enough for them then too bad
It's all I have

I've got a paper one too, I was told by Fat Dave down the pub, that as long as you have photo ID that correlates to your license, you should be ok

Why not just get a proper licence it's simple at the post office.

A paper licence is not worth the hassle, even where legal. It's hard to hire a car and it confuses/enrages foreign police officers.

Remember, you might need a hire car in an emergency, even if you're not planning to hire one.

I'd certainly advise she got an IDP if she's unwilling to get a modern licence. There's 3 different versions determined by treaty year. You need to look up each country to see which year IDP is valid.

Just wrap your paper licence round a €50 and you will be fine if stopped.

Thanks everyone. He's applying for a photo licence but we travel next week! Poor planning I know but we changed our plans as were originally just going to France. Guess I'll be the one driving in Belgium then ...
