What is the latest view on fresh water filtering. My van has a Nature Pure Walter filter which hasn't been changed for a few years now - due to lack of motorhome use. From 'Pure Water Online' the 400009 Nature Pure Ultrafine Cartridge is now over £100. I know there was some controversy a few years ago - so just wondered if there were any thoughts before I decide whether to proceed with the £116 including delivery spend, or whether to look for a different solution? Thanks

Me too! The price is unbelievable, how long do they last btw?

We had a Nature Pure in our RV when we full timed, primarily fitted for going to Morocco where the quality of the water was questionable, but not since, and as you have said, the replacement filters are way too expensive.. and besides, don't believe you need one, unless otherwise marked, Non Potable, all tap water is potable both here and mainland Europe .. so couldn't justify the cost.

Brita filters do not remove bacteria , viruses or any other nasty, they are but charcoal filter that remove chlorine and improve taste ..

We use neither, and do as Stonemags76 ..

Thanks. It's not the water going in to the tank that I am concerned about, it's more the stuff that sits in there between trips in the parts that do not drain. We tend to use separate filled bottles for coffee etc, so it's only really used for things like teeth and vegetable/fruit rinsing. I think you are supposed to change then once a year, but our current one has probably been in there for over 4 years. I suppose I got just rinse it off and leave it another year, and buy one next year. Might see what water quality testers are available.

If you drain fresh water tank regularly and then once filled flush through all taps it will help to take care of anything in system.
However that is not a guarantee that the water is potable unless it is treated and or sterilised.
So as most say, separate bottles for drinking water is easiest and cheapest way to go.

Re Nature Pure, we use the hard water filter here in the UK, and swap to the bacterial filter when abroad.

As we are in receipt of several filters, due to the debacle some years ago, the system will stay in use for now. ;)

When in Spain, Rita had problems with the local water, so had to go on bottled water. Before the next trip, we reinstated the Nature Pure filter system on our new (to us) MH. The difference was immediate in comparison, with better digestive health being a really noticeable result for her. (y)

I do have to say that the filters really do make a difference to the taste and smell of my tea and coffee, compared to brews made from water straight out of the tap.
Nothing scientific, just personal observations from us both. :)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I bought this filter and filter housing along with this tap and other bits and bobs to install them for just under £100.

Filters last for 12 months and replacements are under £37 and remove pretty well everything.

We found water at a France Passion site which had leaves in it! Further investigation revealed it came from a tank on the roof with a poorly fitted lid. In Corsica we twice filled with water which was cloudy and tasted unpleasant. Then a family member caught Giadia which is an unpleasant thing which took some time to recover from. It's mostly caught from drinking contanimated water.

So I fitted a 3M water filter which is what we use for drinking water. For tea etc we just use the normal tap as the water is going to be boiled which kills most bugs. Ideally you should boil the water for one minute which will kill almost all of the bugs but we wouldn't be popular letting our whistling kettle boil for that long!

The 3M filter is only one micron and won't filter out everything but it filters out most nasties. I change it every 6 months. If you don't change them regularly they simply become hosts to bacteria and any treatment material like silver will become ineffective over time.

We only use bottled water for teas n coffees n drinks. Don't like the plastic taste from water pipes on most sites or from my tank. We use elsan fresh tank treatment the start of each season. Fill leave a week drain n flush all good. Still ain't drinking it though lol most of my drink comes in bottles or tins anyway.

we use the water form the tank just as we do at home....

if you are uncertain or concerned about it you could fit a filter .. or fill bottles at the site tap, bottled may not as safe as you think.. and certainly not good for the environment

The Primary Dangers of Plastic Bottled Water

When I say bottled. We reuse 3 X 5 littre water containers which we fill from home at the filtered tap in kitchen. But originally bought them from Tesco's I think £1.50 each. But the containers are the clear rigid plastic so no plastic tastes. They store in a folding crate under bed/seat. So reuse plastics. Save the trees. I need trees for me log burner. Lol
