I was wondering if anyone uses dried skimmed milk for their tea and coffee instead of taking fresh and whether they keep some in the camper, if so what brands are the favourites?

Good idea ! I forgot about dried skimmed milk. I used to use it years ago when I was the only one in the house who drank skimmed milk and I found it was just the same taste to be honest I think it was Marvel dried skimmed milk.

Dried milk takes me back to camping trips in the 60's. The trick then was to rehydrate it with a little cold water first to avoid the lumps. :)

Currently in France and using the long-life stuff. It's much better than it used to be.

Yes we have a tub of dried milk in the van, just in case. We use it at home for morning tea before we get up. Just put it in the mug before the tea. And other half uses it when he makes bread pudding. Use Sainsburys own brand.

Yeuch! The thought makes me shiver…

I remember 5 pints and carnation before that. It’s either too weak and tastes of white water or too strong and tastes burned. I agree UNT has improved, but…Fresh please!

5 pints, that's a blast from the past; it always had a funny taste but was great if you had no fridge.

We use semi skimmed all the time it’s available in France Demi Ecreme but we use long life mainly from lidl
skimmed is just Ecreme

I also use Nestle or Kenco sachets of coffee and milk powder mixed together where you just add boiling water to them.

Looked at buying some Marvel last trip but the price nowadays is crazy. It's much cheaper just to have a carton of UHT in a cupboard just in case

Yes marvel is about twice the price of own brands.

I went on a weight loss program last year and this meant no milk in tea or coffee, successfully lost 3.5 stone. But since found I cannot abide any type of milk in my drinks.

Try without for a fortnight, you may be surprised 😜

I did the same but I had a wedge of lemon in my tea instead of milk (I don’t drink coffee but I don’t think it would taste nice with lemon 🤪).

What about Coffeemate, I remember it from my student days in my hall of residence where there was no fridge. I wonder if it’s still around, soon converted to black coffee. I’d drunk black tea since I was about 10.

we keep a couple of cartons of UHT semi skimmed in the van,, and it's great on cornies when chilled .. a lot better than dried milk:ROFLMAO:

Once opened it keeps for several weeks days in the fridge

I was brought up on this! A few others will have been too I reckon. Rationing had not long ended!

We used dried milk, possible marvel or sainsburys equivalent, for years. We had a large jug and would make up a a couple of pints and keeep it in the fridge. OK on tea and on cereal but I found it a bit scummy with coffee. Now we use boxes of long life milk so only need to buy once a week.

Horrible stuff, made from glucose tastes like someone has put sugar in your drink.

We do keep powdered milk in the van, often use it for custard but found out on our last trip it goes off, it smelt disgusting.

That reminds me of when I was a kid I made my mum a lemon tea for the first time (powdered instant stuff), I didn't realise that you weren't supposed to put milk in it! 😄

I used to always use coffee mate light in pod made coffee as liquid milk made it too cold. Coffee mate light has since been banned in many countries due to chemicals and “bad stuff” and can be very hard to source. I found “original” but it gives coffee a too creamy taste. I’ve since moved onto Morrisons own. The only one not to give it a creamy taste. Always have at home and mh but only for pod coffee. 👍🏻

When buying supermarket own-brand dried milk, I always check the ingredients to make sure they haven't sneaked in any nasties. So far, I have found that they are just made with skimmed milk.

I'd rather have my tea or coffee black than add powdered milk tbh, but it reminded me of one of the apprentices who used to sprinkle powdered milk on hot buttered toast for his breakfast !
I used to like those small cans of tinned cream (not the condensed or evap stuff) on fresh fruit salad if we were away, but haven't seen it in the shops for a good while ?
