Loving life and travelling with Jan
Good morning
Has anyone knowledge on a Dometic oven & It’s Thermostat, and ways to test to see if this is the problem or not?
I recently bought the oven from a fellow Funster
(bought new but not fitted) so as new.
I had it professionally fitted but we found that turning the dial to increase the heat/flame,has no effect! I am presuming it’s a faulty Thermostat or dial, but before I take it out, could it be something I have missed. Gas Hob works fine, even with 3 rings on full! so plenty of Gas pressure. We are in Gloucestershire, are there any Gas fitters local to us who could be recommend to look at it instead🤔
Any thoughts gratefully received as leaving for Spain in 10 days and Wife’y needs her oven as she loves cooking 🙂
A good day to everyone, may it be kind to you.

The thermostat has no effect on the flame it changes the temperature at which the flame turns down. Have you run the oven up to a high temperature to test it? Did the installer not commission it? It not legal to install a gas appliance and not commission it

Without looking at it it is not easy to see where the fault is, it could be a partial blockage in the injector or even the gas line, it should have been checked and commissioned by the installer. If the flame comes on at full flame and then drops it could be a misplaced thermostat phile. Or of course it could be a fault with the gas supply, worth checking that the gas isolator is fully open.

Is the flame floppy or does it have clear inner and outer cones?

Yes, he commissioned it along with a Habitation check, he has been working on caravans and motorhomes for many years and was recommended.
Maybe we are under the impression that the flame should be higher when it is not? Are we thinking along the lines of the gas hob flame, and it is not the same?
Having never seen one operating before so maybe we should find someone with the same oven and view their flame when lit?🤔
Kind Regards

Sounds to me like the "Thermocouple" is not working,
ie the flame will not get big as a faulty Thermocouple will restrict the gas flow until it gets quite hot.(safety feature)

Thermocouple's are a relatively cheap fix.

Ah, that makes good sense! 👍
Thank you for that thought, I think in that case my next job is to light the oven and leave it to get really hot to see if it effects the thermo-coupler? If the flame do’s not improve, then it could prove your theory is correct🙂👍
Many thanks for your input!
Kind regards

Hi Gasman,
You know your stuff!👍🙂
As our motorhome is at the garage having an mot and a check over I am unable to check at this time.
However, from memory the flame was a bit floppy and all Yellow, so a lack of gas pressure is the most suspect cause? As soon as “Lola”
is home I will investigate the isolater knob on / off position and your other suggestions.
Thank you, much appreciated
Kind regards

That's not how it works, an oven with a thermocouple will be on or off, an oven with a low flame at start up has a flame safety device which works on expansion, I've never seen one of those in a caravan.

DAC and Jan as I said in the pm I suspect the oven was not commissioned at installation, is the installer Gas Safe reigisted?

If the thermocouple isn't working it will not light.....there's no inbetween.
The thermocouple hold the gas valve open once warm....if it's not warm the gas valve closes.
This one must be working as the flame is low.
nothing to do with flame height

Sounds normal to me.

On ours the flame is pitiful and once lukewarm turns to even more pitiful.

The flame will turn down once up to temperature. All the knob does is change the temperature the flame will turn down at. Leave it on for 30 minutes and open door, see if flame rises. Quick and easy.

Hi, Googlebot,
You have described our oven to a T!
Yes, poor flame with no visual colour apart from a Wavy Yellow flame! Thank you!
On recommendation from
The Gasman, I am hoping to get Vince to look at it for me, he is our local mobile service man that I have only just discovered!🙄
I will let you know the outcome if you would like, I am undecided what is right or if it ‘s wrong?
Hopefully he will have the answer!
