Do you bother with your satellite dish anymore?

Def sat dish for me. ( Oyster )
Ours must be 10 or 12 years old now, and is in constant use.
Had cause to strip it down last week ( the feed cable from the base to the lnb has gone phut) and was pleased to find the mechanical side still like new
I think streaming is ok if you are happy watching a small screen or have a non 12v telly.. we like big screens and pretty much insist on 12v

You left out "in some places"
In others ,like here , even 1,2m will not get you anything.

Exactly.(y)
80cm gets plenty 30 miles south of Cadiz !
Here in Benidorm the only stuff we do not get and anything from the bbc or itv, but all the Sky channels

Forgot to mention we stream to tv using Chromecast
Can even use it when not on EHU as just use a usb cable to power it into charging port I installed at back of van and a nice long usb cable

No TV, dish or similar in our van, we occasionally watch a DVD on an iPad.

And you use some sort of mifi for that ?

Nope hotspot on mobiles.
Two days we connect

Wife turns her mobile hotspot on. I connect to it and in turn connect to Chromecast then open Netflix and throw it to tv.

Or sometimes we can just connect direct from wifes mobile and watch Netflix from her mobile. This way does not always work. So we tend to use first method.

Used to use a mifi until she switched her contract to three last year

Only fitted a cheap Snipe to this van OK in France, probably won't bother with a dish on the next van. For this trip (Spain) recorded loads of stuff from Prime using a HDMI capture adaptor & for convenience loaded them onto my Android TV box. In Portugal last year with a NOS SIM with unlimited data just streamed everything.
Never have any trouble streaming with a MiFi but I do have a roof top aerial.

We have satellite but I don’t think we’d bother with it when we change vehicles.

Only ended up with a dish as Hymer thew it in with the deal I would have preferred a dome, to many channels on this satellite stuff, and never had the need to stream anything.

Yes 80 cm works in both those places but due to the footprint here you really need 1,9m to guarantee a picture.

On a recent 6 week visit to Scandinavia we watched Game of Thrones in its entirety on dvd. An episode every night. When that ran out we have Only fools and Horses also on dvd. To be honest, I can scarcely cope with most tv as it’s all adverts that I detest.

I cant understand having a fixed in tv these days, we use a 2in1 laptopwith a mix of data and freeview on a TVMan mini wifi Freeview receiver. We can use it anywhere in the van and outside.

Never been able to justify the expense of roof mounted satellite/dome. However the Latest `van came with it and I can get all the Sky stuff in the UK. I found that when we used to winter in La-Manga, around the time The Astra offerings where moved. I could still get most of the UK stuff with a Sky dish, rescued from a skip!, and the old sky box. 4 of us clubbed together and shared a 5ft dish the last winter. In order to get the BBC and ITV clearly without lots of pixelation, and keep the "Managers" happy with Corrie etc. and the "footy" of course. as well as the (then) "5 Nations", F-1 et-al.

If we watch a couple of hours a week in the van it means it has rained a lot. This van came with an Oyster and although it sounds ridiculous the less you watch the more you need an auto dish - it's so easy to switch on just for the odd programme. In the past if there was something we wanted to watch there was a big decision to make about whether it was worth getting the dish out & setting it up. Especially if we were leaving the following morning. It's so easy with the Oyster we switch it on even if it's for a ten minute news bulletin.

We had oyster dish with full sky package until recently, but it was increasingly stressful trying to get anything whilst on our long trips to Spain. We decided not to fit a new dish on this van and see how we went without it. We went for a Humax pvr at home, and fill the 1tb hard drbefore we go. We also have a MiFi with 50gbs per month on Vodafone, and use a WiFi booster wherever site WiFi is available. During our last 90 day trip this set up was ideal, with always something to watch, and no stress of where to park, skew, tuning etc. Uses about 1gb an hour on mifi, but lots of campsites now have good WiFi we found.
Pretty much the same for us too . Humax hard drive full over the time at home . Don’t think we would fit a dish if we change the van . Have an Oyster at the moment but just use in short trips here and if we venture over the channel ! Which is about 1 week per year !

What direction is Hotbird and what channels do you get? I have not used my Multimo dish in Spain for years,,BUSBY.

Just to add on Hotbird the English news channels are, BBC World news, Euronews, AlJazera, France 24,and a couple of others

Everyone seems to stream their TV these days. Is the rooftop satellite system dead or do you still have a need for it?
Didn't you get your internet via satellite at one stage?

40cm Dome
Wind what wind?
It is quite interesting.. a dome produces more wind drag than a folded dish, so affects mpg.
There is also the point that physics will not be beaten, and the dish size when outside the uk is pretty important.
Having said that, I think if we were going to stay in the uk we might well opt for dome too

I bought one of these last year, we don't watch much TV anyway and not bothered if we can't get signal, but this little gizmo has worked so far much to my amazement.
High Gain Freeview TV Aerial - August DTA240 - HD Portable Indoor/Outdoor Digital HD Antenna for USB TV Tuner / DVB-T Television / DAB Radio / SD / 4K - With Magnetic Base Amazon product ASIN B007JPOX8O

A bit of both for us too, we often wild camp in the Galloway forest where Wi-Fi signal is scarce so the satellite system is a boon if you want a quiet evening with the tv on.

We're currently looking for a new moho & I already have a brand new satellite system to fit to whatever we buy.

Don't have a sat dish on the moho. Probably not enough space on the roof.

We have a Roadpro rooftop dish. Always use it, particularly when stopping in Scotland. Terrestrial signals often not accessible up here, particularly in remote areas. And the same goes for streaming with our MiFi. Lucky to get a 2G phone signal most of the time unless we're in the Central Belt or around bigger towns/cities like Oban, Inverness etc. If all else fails, its table games, but we're very competitive....

Just ordered one so will see how we go with it. Thanks for the link.

We have digi Ariel and satellite plus we have 75g a month data and that’s not enough if you want streaming all month. So we do a bit of everything Netflix, satellite and digital where we can.

Use our satellite system all the time. Our Mifi only seems to work on 3G when abroad......so streaming not really viable AND it's expensive in data useage.

Anyway, it's fun trying to get line of sight and miss all the trees
Not sure if you're aware but if you're using a Three datasim they restrict you to 3G coverage when abroad unlike others such as Vodafone. Of course, you will need a 4G router!

Don’t know about the three datasim but the normal pay as you go three sim has just started working on 4G this week.
