Unless I’ve misunderstood if I buy a digital vignette for Austria today it’s not valid until the 8th October ? Not practical for us footloose and fancy free tourers really . Paper one it is then, if I can find one .

Please feel free to correct my understanding

Digital Vignettes are available. Only valid 18 days AFTER purchase
(Driven through Austria at least twice a year every year for several years)

Paper sticker Vignette can be bough in the very first service station in Austria you come across.
In many cases this is right on the border, so be ready for it as there are no signs warning you it's there.
But it's usually 50m past the 'Welcome to Austria' sign.
Otherwise first village shop or petrol station that you see over the border

Vignettes are small stickers put on the top left of the inside of the screen, inside the wiper arc.
They are valid for a fixed number of days, from memory is something like 3 days, 6 days, 9 days and 14 days.

However due to the small markup, many places only do the 9 day minimum

Vignettes are supposed to be only for vehicles under 3500 kg.
If you are over this (we are) then decide if you motorhome looks like a standard 3500 kg van
(If you have a 8m tag axle A class, then don't buy a Vignette)

For those that "look" over 3500kg you need to get a GoBox
Which is another level of complication for the irregular traveller.

With a good navigator and paper maps it is possible to transit Austria avoiding the toll roads, BUT, it means ignoring all the signs, planning your exact route in advance, and hoping there are no detours.

Be aware if the exit is via Slovenia, then you get an ANPR Vignette which needs to be bought on line, in advance here
It is also possible, with advance planning, to transit Slovenia without a Vignette, but the navigator needs to be very good, as you will be going up some 'interesting' roads.
Tarmac may be optional, random livestock will be compulsory.

Some corrections to my text above, as it appears there are some recent changes.
ANPR Vignettes are now available for Austria here
BUT they are not valid until 18 days after purchase !!!

They have also done away with the short term Vignettes,
They are now only valid for 10 days, two months or one year.

Sticker Vignettes are still in use and are still available in the first petrol station or shop or post office over the border.

So for those of us transiting Austria and not sure of an exact ETA, a paper sticker for 10 days (€9.90) bought at the border is the best option.

For those that plan ahead and will be going through at least twice, then the ANPR version, bought 18 days before you depart, valid for two months at €29 may be the easiest option.
(There is no 90 day special option for the British who are maximising their time in Italy, Croatia or Greece!)

You can buy digital vignettes at physical sales outlets (such as filling stations) without the need to wait for 18 days to use them. The 18 days only applies if you buy them from the ASFINAG website and is due to distance selling regulations. You can also buy digital section tolls at the same outlets.

Below is a link to the list of sales outlets, which you can view in map or list form. There are several in Germany if you are heading into Austria from that direction.

I also understand if you buy online you can buy earlier than needed and then after doing so alter your dates so you can use it when you actually need to. E.g buy now for 4 weeks ahead and then amend to meet your entry date. Passes the distance selling rules etc.

People could buy then use to cross then cancel & get a refund if there was no 18 day delay is my understanding of why they’ve done this
