Lots of lorries are now being equipped solely with digital rear view cameras on pillars attached on the side of the vehicle, no traditional mirrors fitted.

Seems like a good idea from the point of view of increased coverage of the side and rear views and no ugly mirrors, the monitor is mounted inside the vehicle so that the driver doesn’t have to move his head so much to view the nearside of the lorry.

Is anyone making kits to fit them to vans/motorhomes yet?

Camos UK, does a four camera system, with recording and option of having two monitors inside. I've also seen cheaper systems online that do similar and are cheaper.

I seem to remember someone on here worked with a company and had a suitable system installed on his motorhome and did away with his rear view mirrors. Perhaps the thread was around the autumn time last year.

Given that a camera relays that, which it 'sees', to the internal monitor, the positiong is the singular difference from one use to another. If at the rear, it may be a rear view camera or a reversing camera. If it's only the front (of a side), looking back, it's a n/s or o/s camera, just like a n/s or o/s door mirror. So plenty of companies could fit to your specification :)

The Camos system with 4 cameras is the 360, which is great but doesn't replace mirrors which is what the OP is talking about I believe, incidentally Camos also do a Mirror replacement system now and you can have it fitted via Trailervision, there are other systems on the market as well and they are creeping onto the options list of some vans, it is an option on MORELO ;) not cheap but none of their options are

If the cameras are not approved for "Mirror Replacement" you might be creating some issues with insurance etc.

Yes, in using cameras and, if the system goes down, what then if there's no mirror or orher ability to see rearwards?
But do you carry spare mirrors in case you smack mirrors with someone coming the other way?

No but the difference is that a computerised system can fail and I would think that that's more likely than me breaking a mirror.
When I fit cameras I'll either keep the mirrors as backup whether in situ or detached and in garage.

I've clipped more mirrors than I've had computer failures in vehicles, nothing is perfect, but I wouldn't want both.

Beat me to it Jev88 most drivers I've spoke to that have them hate them plus if you whack a camera off your knackered I know all the Mercedes truck breakdown Van's have to carry a replacement old style arm and mirrors to cover such eventualities but I think Mr Porky has mirror cam on his new toy but dont know if he likes it
