Is there such a thing as a ‘small’ diesel genny? If so how easy are they to start/use?

After our latest power cut, we are keen to get a bit more self sufficient and get a small generator. I know a Honda petrol one is probably a no brainer, but we have a big oil tank feeding our central heating. I would rather use that than keep petrol sitting around.

Size and use ability is very important though. I would be pleased to hear from any body out there with experience/knowledge of diesel generators? Ed.

Doh!! I don’t know, just thinking of it as red diesel.
Though in the worst case I would still rather have diesel sitting around than petrol. Thanks for the heads up.

You can run a jet engine on it, but have never seen a turbine generator. That, like a black swan, doesn't mean none exist but noise and exhaust temperature would prove difficult to contain.

There is a problem if you want it to power the whole house, or even just a few essential circuits. The requirements for a separate earth and earth/neutral bonding in those circumstances don't seem to be understood by a lot of electricians in my experience.
