Did you buy a van off eBay from a Hire Company in Cambridgeshire?

All history should be available to you as a buyer. If not there is something wrong. On this forum just friendly advise to help people out.

The motorhome is located at the Vaaroom Bristol Depot, It was arranged that I was going to veiw this weekend until I realised it was a Bank Holiday.

But it was Vaaroom that bought out the company that went bust that had these chattel morgages.

Can I suggest that you check out these two companies as I think you will find some names in common,so they are just perpetuating the scam.

The problem seems to be that Chattel mortgages don't show up.
It's entirely up to you, but I would walk away.

This would seem to be a problem for all buyers, whether private or through dealers, because even the dealer could be conned when taking in a MH, so could not be sued if the owner of the MH through a chattel mortgage later turns up to reclaim it.

I wonder what dealers do to protect themselves? Do they have Title Insurance?

Maybe Simon - Alan Kerr would provide an answer to that question.

I was interested in a motorhome from this seller back in March. Not at all forthcoming with any information and didn't answer questions. His attitude just seemed to scream "if you spot something dodgy, ill just sell it to someone who doesn't. I'll get my money and be shut of it either way".

Alarm bells started ringing the moment he said it was actually in Romford and not in Bristol - why not just list where it is? Why go to the hasstle of transporting it from one place to the other?

Dare I say that Jonsmith55 doesn't like the collective wisdom of Funsters, isn't willing to invest Ā£15 for membership and yet is willing to lose Ā£20k on a dodgy deal.

You can lead a horse to water... etc etc

Check out ā€˜Rip off Britainā€™, BBC1 this morning.

An article on RIP off Britain, this morning, interviwed a guy who bought a chassis flash from this company and found out later it had a chattel mortgage on it.they also interviewed the original owners who bought it along with 2 other Van's as an investment to hire out etc.after an initial foray with the company in 2014 brought them in good returns.
They were not aware one of their Van's has been sold on prior to the firm going bust.they sent a lawyers letter to the new owners wanting the van back.the new owner is holding on to it and so now it's a dispute between the original owner and the new owner.
RIP of Britain contacted the director of the site and the only comment he made was that ,if they had paid by credit card the banks should sort it out for them.
RIP of Britain did not resolve anything ,basically just reported it.

Shame they missed the current situation, a new Company was born with links to the old outfit bought it up, and is it is going to happen all over again.

At the end of the programme they did say they would be following up on the story and report back. (y)

I donā€™t know if it would fully work but if I was buying now Iā€™d want the MD of a company to sign a personal statement to say there was no loans secured against the vehicle and it was his companyā€™s sole ownership and free to sell. If they wonā€™t sign walk away. If they do sign then it would be fraud if something were wrong which seem to have been the problem with previous deals that the company owners can disassociate themselves from the loans.

Thanks for keeping this thread going. I'm one of the unlucky buyers with the investor wanting me give up my motorhome and pay them interest and depreciation!! It's a crazy situation where it is almost impossible to find out if a chattel mortgage affects your motorhome and of course is totally open to abuse. If you are an affected buyer there is help out there as an action group of innocent buyers have been defending the claims. Please go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/276383316975332/ for more information.

Hi new member here.
I'm bidding on a Chausson motorhome on ebay that ends tonight and found this thread re chattel morgages.
I know the seller is based in Cambridgeshire and they seem to be refusing to share the motorhomes registration number plate number.. Suspicious??
Here's a post I did on Facebook:

Be cautious when buying a second hand Chausson. Why?

1. You are unlikely to find out if it's an ex-Unbeatable Hire (UBH) as this information is held by DVLA and will only be released by them if you can demonstrate a ā€œreasonable causeā€ unless UBH are the last registered owners on V5 document (and you are allowed to see this), or the seller knows and is happy to disclose this.

2. Once you find out that chattel mortgages are a thing and are registered Companies House, they are not easy to find even with the vin number. There is no easy search function with 810 charges registered over 33 pages with the chassis numbers not always detailed so you may need to check the actual chattel document uploaded which is usually around 15 pages long to find out the information you want.

3. As others have said, these chattel loans will not appear in the usual HPI checks carried out when buying any vehicle. Even HPI lending companies who are supposed to be experts in this field have lent on motorhomes with chattel mortgages.

4. Some motorhomes (like mine) were sold by UBH hire several years before going into liquidation and may have changed ownership several times.

5. If you are unfortunate to have bought one of motorhomes with an outstanding chattel mortgage you will receive unpleasant and threatening and accusatory letters from the investorā€™s solicitors. You will have to incur unnecessary legal costs to be able to respond to the claim.

6. This could take years before a case comes before the court so you will have this hanging over your head all this time with the threat from the investors lawyers that you should not use the motorhome as you will be charged for depreciation in value and interest costs.
Iā€™m sure there are many ā€˜cleanā€™ Chaussons out there to buy but you will need to do a lot more investigation than you would do normally when buying any other vehicle.

7. The liquidation company may have a claim over the motorhomes they "sold" to "new" companies before UBH went into administration. If you buy one of these and the company you bought from ceases to exist you may be left defending a claim against your motorhome.

Hope this helps

So basically is it right that people have bought motorhomes to rent out through this rogue company, the rogue company have then sold the motorhomes which didnā€™t belong to them and the original owners did not know this?
Legally the original owners are the legal owners still?
